The Tokyo concert was added to Live 8 two weeks ago because Geldof wanted to put pressure on Japan, the only Asian member of the G8, to lift its aid to Africa.
As late as the day before the concert, Japanese internet bloggers were saying they had only just heard about the concert and did not know where to get tickets, which were issued in a lottery. A further complication was that the concert started on Saturday afternoon and ended at 8pm, a strange arrangement for Tokyo's night owls.
