My favorite j-pop artist is Ayu. But I just discovered hitomi (her artist name is simply "hitomi") which have amazing music. It's a mix of pop and rock. Really amazing. If you want to buy an album of hers, try "thermo plastic" which is amazing or "Self Portrait" instead for her "best" album.
Don't go for Ai Otsuka if you don't like extremely, super squeaky voice. LOL.
