Hard to say, cross-dressers and transsexuals are popular in Taiwan as well (my mom constantly sees them on variety shows and ALWAYS says that some of the transsexuals are more of a woman than any of us). While I don't think this equals acceptance in either Taiwan or Japan, it is openness to these people to some extent. It's hard to explain, on one hand it's something of a spectacle, on the other hand the audience does actually connect.
