I've always seen the word (in singles from many different countries) referring to any song on the single that isn't the main song or songs. Even answers.com defines a B-side as referring to "the 'bonus' tracks on a CD single."
generally, covers are still considered "b-sides" when they are extra tracks on singles. but also remember that since music is no longer sold on vinyl records, it's all a misnomer anyway

Well, I guess I don't consider it a B-side unless it's original to the artist or something :p It's not common for people to do covers a lot, is it?
