In the end, the message is optimistic as much harsher as the scenario might seem.
And reading the translation through other sources such as wataru the song sounds a lot more about being confident and having faith and hope, despite the bad moments (maybe even the title means something like caring less for all the problems and looking for the future rather than the past, I dunno).
The PV shows the opposite: the angel has a last hope but dies in the end, so the message through the PV is that even hope dies in the end, showing ayumi crying and jailed in a cage. THat's totally different from the whole message of the song.

Don't want to turn this into a Whatever discussion, so this will be all I say about the topic.

The lyrics for Whatever are pretty desolate throughout and while there are a few lines of hope here and there - to me it seemed like false hope and that Ayu knew it was false hope but was trying to convince herself otherwise. That's why the PV is the way it is, it does reflect the lyrics.
