That only depends on what kind of mic it is, some microphones only pick up sound when you are more or less chewing them, other pick up sound at a small distance. They're good for different things, depending on what else is supposed to happen on stage during the song.
I don't know what the benefits of the different mics are, but as there exist several different kinds they've got their uses for sure.
