He is tall.
Ayu is 5'2" and if I remember correctly Tomoya is around 6'0" - possibly even taller. Notice in the pic of them standing side by side, she is in heels. So the height difference between them is actually greater than what it looks like.

Mini Moni was all made up of girls under 5'0" so Ayu was too tall for it.
