That is what the recording companies tell us, research pretty much point in the very much exact opposite direction. Piracy has rather saved the recording industry, making the sales drop slower than they normally would.
The normal CD-R is almost an obsolete medium after so many years, just like its predecessors, vinyls, tapes etc. They all had lower and lower sales, and then a new medium to release media on was invented.
The recording companies simply need to find a new attractive way to present us their music, if they want to earn excessive amounts of money again.
None of them is certainly not running low on money, at the least.
