I agree that it's pretty stupid to get a tattoo if all you are going to do is make other people's lives difficult by asking them cover it up with makeup and so on.

Also, to get a tattoo removed, they use a laser that fragments the pigments of the tattoo into small particles that are then removed by the immune system. Black ink is easiest to remove. Depending on the colors and how deeply they have been drawn into your skin, you may or may not be successful in completely removing the tattoo. You need to have laser treatment done several times (6-10 for professionally drawn tattoos) and each session can cost around $250-$850, so you may end up spenind a lot of money. I don't think it is excruciating...they say it's like having a rubber band snapped against your skin.
