Like others have said, I identify a rock song by the use of guitars. That's why there is so many types of sub-genres for it. When considering Slashess list of rock singers and bands, you can relegate them to any of the many different sub-genres. They represent an aspect of what it is to be rock, but none of them are nowhere close to defining the whole genre.
