The Perception of Ayu in Japan?

What does the Japanese public think about Ayu vs. what us Western fans perceive?

I think as Western fans we tend to have much different taste - I was just looking on iTunes and Five is the bestseller with 4 1/2 stars, yet (m)u and Love Songs that we generally raved about received maany 1 star reviews with an average of 4 star ratings.
I don't get it..
