I think the situation is different in Japan, and the Japanese is the target audience, so that's ok. Only a third of Ayu fans who will buy the album will also buy the single, and even then they don't download the PVs on the computer to watch it there instead. How many times did you watch STEP you before the album? Well imagine if you didn't have the computer. In that case, I'd definately buy the single with the DVD.

Whether you buy the DVD or not is entirely upto you. In 2000, we didn't have a choice. You could ONLY buy the CD with a new song (and remixes, instrumentals and extras) that would later be on the album. You could only get the PVs in HQ if you'd get a compilation DVD (complete clip box, a clips 1, a clips 2). Now you can have get your favorite PVs much easier.

Also, over the years we know how much power Ayu has within avex. She may not be responible for about 40% of avex' income, but a short time ago Ayu used her power to assign the new Avex president. An artist who has the power to make someone president of the record company surely also has the power to do anything with her releases as she wants..

Anyway Startin' / Born to be... is worth buying in my opinion. I like the cover (and the booklet probably is gonna be just as great as the last couple of singles), and we get 3 bonus tracks that won't be on the album. The song "teens" and 2 instrumentals. And of course I want to support Ayu.
That all-together is enough reason for me to buy this single. Then I only have one choice left; CD or CD+DVD. In 2000 we didn't have the choice, but I still don't feel like buying CD+DVD now. they're too thick and don't fit in my "Ayu CD presentation poster" I have on the wall... So for me, I'm happily buying the CD standalone

my thoughts exactly! :p

But of course Avex is stuffing Ayu products. That's what they do. They make a bajillion products in a short time so that all the fans will collect everything.

Koda Kumi anyone?

I used to buy CD+DVD versions just because I couldn't wait to watch the latest PVs in HQ on my DVD player, and then regret buying them later since usually all the single PVs are included on the next album. Unless it was a single that has a PV like "my name's WOMEN" from a previous album, I'd buy the CD only version.

Hmmm... you've made a great point nick.
That's why I'm hoping that in the future, Ayu has single-only material on the DVD - for instance the STEP you DVD had the my name's WOMEN PV. Maybe even an interview or something on the DVD. I think I would buy it regardless, since I tend to watch PVs whenever I feel like it.

well CD+DVD versions are wut sells now, so it would make sense for avex to make the single to have the CD+DVD versions and also the album to have the CD+DVD versions (as not everyone buys singles). n at least they do add some new stuff on the album DVD.

i had a problem with no space too. i love buying cds and manga. they are now taking up a LOT of my space...though i would like to buy a new shelf, i do not have room for my shelf!!!
back on topic, i like the fact that ayu's singles had pvs. though it would be included in the album, at least you can to see them first hand, instead of waiting for months.

^ when i run out of space i just reorganize the stuff and i can always find a little more space...heehee..that's what happens when you don't wanna throw anything away

not sure about the marketing strategy..but for singles i usually only buy the cd version cause the album has the pvs already...so no point getting cd+dvd..and the recent covers for cd and cd+dvd are quite similar so even less reason for me to get the cd+dvd

It's quite a dilemma, but what do you complain about, you have money, buy them.

I'm only collecting Ayu albums and luckily I got complete clip box japanese version for only 65 dollars, I'll get some concerts in the future. About singles I think they're quite expensive and I don't want to spend on them just to have instrumental or remixes, even if the DVD includes a CM that doesn't make them anymore interesting. The only single I think I'll get is STEP you/is this LOVE? just to have my name's WOMAN PV; some songs are different on the single that on the album, like alterna, maybe LATER I'll consider getting that, but only the CD version.

So you see, it's just matter of what you really want.

It is too bad that the CD/DVD versions are so big, and just have stuff that is on the album DVD anyway, but it's still collectable.
If only they put a lot of other cool stuff on the DVDs... I don't know about you guys, but I just LOVE the fairyland slideshow, I watched it over and over. If we got a lot more cool stuff like that, or like the my name's WOMEN PV as a bonus, it would totally be worth it.

Yeah, I think if the had single elusives, then it'd be TOTALLY worth buying. But I buy it because I watch it in school, and try to get my friends to like her.

i think the point isnt really about the shelf, it is the record complanies exploiting fans excessively.

nick, i actually have the same feeling. i didnt buy bold and delicious single for exactly the same reason...everything will be on the album dvd anyway. it is the very first time i dont buy an ayu single!
