Ayu's Childhood Career
Now that I think about it, you never hear much of anything about Ayumi's roles in the dramas she played in when she was younger. MDN Mainichi just put up an article about it:

I do have 2 movies of her in her teens, and the roles she played weren't what most would consider "glamorous". I remember in one of them (not sure of it was the "Ladies! Ladies" movie or not), a guy wanted to have sex with her, but she refused. I was kinda surprised to see Ayu in such a role, even if nothing occured with her and the guy.

I'm not too suprise that ayu had played some roles that we wouldnt have expected someone like her to act out. eg. like the roles what Prime and Prismatic Tears writen about. Acting was ayu job back then, and like testsuo69 said so, it not like ayu could just turn around and just say no, i dont want the role etc...
She would have needed the job, which i think might have meant a lot to her . I think this because i remember reading that ayumi came from a very poor family when she was little and at the age of 12 she went in to moddeling so she could earn some money for her family. To me it doesnt really matter what roles she did, because it not like ayu sold her boby and went nude etc....

"What she did then doesn't really go with the charismatic pop diva image she presents nowadays," Takakura tells Shukan Gendai. "All the details of her time as a teen idol have been eliminated from the bio she's put up on her official site."
yea that's really true .. that's why ayu doesn't really like to talk about her past .. her life now differs greatly from her childhood or whatever ..

For some reason... I think that if she hadn't done all those back then, she wouldn't be as acomplished as she is right now...
Sometimes it just takes one step... one step undecided whether if its right or wrong, to take someone on a totally different path. I may very well be wrong, but I think if she hadn't started her early career and remained like every other teenage girl, we wouldn't have the Ayu we all love today.

i agree.
without that 'time' in her earlier career .. she wouldn't have experienced so much and felt so "lost" as she often repeats in her lyrics .. and speaking of her lyrics .. they wouldn't be as awesome if she grew up in a super happy family .. it's because ayu was similar to so many other girls hanging around in shibuya those days ... that her lyrics related to them so much .. that made ayu so famous ... without that time in her career she wouldn't have been as mature right now i think .. she's only 25 years old !! and she calls herself a product of avex! ayu is amazing ^^ sigh

Ayumi`s past
I founded this text when I was on Minitokyo forum`s...
Original source: http://zdenek.szm.sk/hamasaki_wai_wai.htm A movie director's arrest last month for using a 12-year-old prostitute has opened up a can of worms exposing sordid details of the past of Ayumi Hamasaki, the undisputed queen of Japanese pop, according to Shukan Gendai (5/22). Hamasaki got her first big break in the Japanese showbiz world as a support actor in the 1995 film "Sumomomomomo," directed by Akiyoshi Imazeki, the over-amorous auteur nabbed because of his preponderance for the pre-pubescent. "Sumomomomomo" was one of Imazeki's most highly regarded works. The large number of teenage girls in the cast, including then 16-year-old Hamasaki, earned Imazeki the moniker of "Maestro of Cute Little Girl Movies." Hamasaki played a central role in "Sumomomomomo," acting as star Maki Mochida's younger sister. One scene in the movie features Hamasaki's character sniffing her sister's skirt, then advising her older sister to refrain from sex with her boyfriend, or at the very least insisting that he wear a condom. During her mid-teens, Hamasaki played several brazen hussy roles, such as in "Nagisa no Sinbad," where she played a schoolgirl who taunted a boy she despised by slowly rubbing a vibrator across his face and neck. "At a time when most teen idols would strive to present a pristine image, Ayumi stood out because of her willingness to play tough girl roles," Idol watcher Fuminori Takakura tells Shukan Gendai. "She was the type you could imagine really see roaming the streets of Shibuya. She was a cute girl and had a realism that was sexy." Takakura says she was a natural choice for Imazeki, the maestro of cute little girl movies. Never short of hawking herself, Hamasaki, according to the teenybopper expert, is not quite as keen to flog her wares when it comes to this part of her career. "What she did then doesn't really go with the charismatic pop diva image she presents nowadays," Takakura tells Shukan Gendai. "All the details of her time as a teen idol have been eliminated from the bio she's put up on her official site." Is this really true? I am confused. ![]()

I have to concur with everything one else...it doesn't really matter what Ayu did before. She could've been a porn star for all I care. What I admire is that, even if it may or may not been against her wishes, she still did it. She knew what she had to do, knew what she wanted, and she went for it. And look where she is today! IMO, she has set an example that all of us could learn from.

She was, to some degree, a professional. People shouldn't confuse the "roles" she had with the "person" she was. It makes no sense to critique her by the roles she took or didn't take. Even if the character in one of the shows was not looked on favourably, it isn't anything to do with her. I think it's just sensationalism in the media, to tell you the truth. WAIWAI does have that kind of rep, from what I've seen.

Most people seem to be identifying the roles that Ayu played with Ayu herself (which really isn't the case, a good actor should be able to play most roles presented to them). It's not really applicable because I don't think she went to her agent and demanded that he find her a role where she could rub vibrators across boy's faces while teasing them.
![]() I just found the article interesting since she was willing to go through and play those roles, in a way, showing early signs of her devotion to her work. She had plans to be the best at whatever she was and her apparent willingness to go through with these less-than-flattering roles is indicative of that statement. Well, to me it is, interpret it how you like. If I could find a less biased/sensational translated Japabese newspaper then I'd read that instead. But that's the way media swings unfortunately. (edited for clarity, I tend to suck at that) |
