Help with music from Brazil, Sweden, Chile, and Germany

Hi guys, I have to help with this presentation and I have to do music from these four countries.

If you could possibly give me YouTube links to popular/relevant musicians in those countries and label the different genres, I will thank you forever. I'm looking for pop, rock, r&b, hip hop, jazz, edm, anything

I've already done a lot for some other countries but I feel like the things I'm finding aren't that relevant because I'm not familiar.

The music will be shown to college students in my organization to help to introduce them to music around the world.

I can help you with Germany if you want. =)
But I'm not sure what you mean with popular/relevant musicians. Do you mean German popular/relevant musicians or in general popular/relevant musicians in Germany?

Haha no problem.

Well, it's quite hard to tell which are relevant German musicians because it depends from which perspective you look at it. But I'll do my best.
I think there are a few names everyone knows and who's music is played quite often on the radio. I try to list just one or two bands per genre, otherwise it would be too much input, I think?

Rock/Punk
The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about German music is die ärzte: Wikipedia. Actually I'm a big fan. xD die ärzte are a punk band from berlin and exist since the 80s. In case die ärzte release a new album you can bet it will get #1 in Germany and they play big (open air) lives with attendants up to 50k. If there are relevant artists die ärzte are sure one of them.
What makes die ärzte special is that they somehow make true punk music. Not genre wise but when it comes to lyrics. die ärzte are well known for their really great lyrics, which often criticise social issues and/or are somehow satirical.
Their best known song would be "Schrei nach Liebe" (Scream/Cry for Love) which is a song against racism.

If you play this song at a party EVERYONE is singing (well it's actually more screaming... lol) to it.
Here are the lyrics with translation if you're interested: http://lyricstranslate.com/de/schrei...-cry-love.html
I don't think the translation is that great but the message comes across I think.

Here is a live video from their last tour:

Things you need to know about die ärzte:
  • die ärzte are some kind of a phenomenon, I would say, because they became popular in the 80s but most of their fans today are in their 20s
  • die ärzte openly speak up against racism and facism, I think that's what attracts their young audience
  • they are a three member group and all three of them do vocals
  • the drummer Bela B. always stands when playing
  • besides for their lyrics they are also known to be fun guys who make a lot of nonsense just for the sake of making nonsense. xD
  • they call themselves (ironically) "Die beste Band der Welt" (the best band in the world) and if someone is reffering to the best band in the world everyone knows they are talking about die ärzte

More well known die ärzte songs:
Spoiler:

Pop
When it comes to pop music Sarah Connor would be somehow popular:
Wikipedia
She was really big in the 2000s but is still well known.
Under My Skin is my favourite song by her:
http://www.myvideo.de/watch/5009356/..._Under_My_Skin
Maybe you know the Tohoshinki version of it. But I like Sarah's version better because it's way more empowering from a female perspective.

Germany's most successfull girl group would be the No Angels: Wikipedia
They are probably the first girl group who was casted through TV in Germany but also the only one which got really popular. They disbanded but I think everyone knows them. One thing especially women like about them is that they were somehow "normal" girls and not to polished.
This would be one of my favourite songs by them:
Feel Good Lies
It's the kind of pop music from the 2000s I'm digging.^^

More No Angels songs:
Spoiler:

Hiphop
I'm not listing hiphop artists which are popular but make sexist and homophobic music. There are some popular acts, but popular is relative here because those acts manly appeal to teenage boys.

Relevant and popular in general (and without sexist and homophobic lyrics) would be Die Fantastischen Vier:

and Fettes Brot:

Also relevant would be Jan Delay, you could say he makes "hiphop", but with a lot of influences from other genres like jazz and funk and so on.

My favourite song by Jan Delay:

And here is a live mashup together with Deichkind

Deichkind are also popular. They began with hiphop music but now are making more electronic music. The medley is a new interpretation of Deichkind's most popular song "Remmidemmi (Yippie Yippie Yeah)":

Last but not least Revolverheld are quite popular atm. They make typical german pop/rock music. There are tons of bands similiar to them. But I like them somehow. This song was VERY popular last year:
(don't wonder, at the beginnig is a lot of talking).

I hope I was able to help you? If you have any questions, just ask! Or if you need a translation for a German song I could also help you.

With some of those genres is quite hard to find here in Brazil, because some styles (like pop, or even EDM) isn't really a thing here, even tho some singers do pop songs here, but in english. We actually have things like "axe-pop" "funk-pop"... Anyway.

The biggest name in brazilian music right now it's probably Ivete Sangalo, she is huuuge here and releasing stuff for more than 20 years with hits all the way through her career!

Pop/Axé: Ivete Sangalo - Dançando (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0f4Lw_ORoA)
Pop/Funk: Anitta - Na Batida (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1vNtmh1SqU)
Pop/EDM: Wanessa - Shine It On (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WegDOu02-tw)
Rock: Pitty - SETEVIDAS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qpV_KiB3Gg)
Bossa Nova: Elis Regina & Tom Jobim - Águas de Março (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1tOV7y94DY)
Country/Sertanejo: Gusttavo Lima - Na Balada (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1ZKaR-9Kt4)
Hip-Hop: Racionais MC's - Vida Loka parte II (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahEllnyfHbI)
Soul: Tim Maia - É Primavera (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7T4gzCpQKgg)
Disco: As Frenéticas - Dancing Days (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDPhClCghmY)
-
And there is also that blonde singer that sang during the opening of the World Cup, Claudia Leitte, with good songs like Exttravasa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fssCDpJkQg), but no one here likes her anyway. haha

Some of them aren't "popular" anymore (and by popular I mean it doesn't play on radio and stuff) but are important names for them genres; like Tom Jobim, Racionais MC's, Tim Maia...
Some of them are generic, like Gusttavo Lima, because the genre is too popular here, with too many singers that are the same thing, that even look alike.
And with some genres there might have bigger names that I couldn't remember, but I might not be aware of them since I'm not a fan, like rock or hip-hop.
The songs that I choose are a mix of popular stuff and newest releases.
-
Since the country is big, there are genres that I'm not familiar with. Since I live in the south region, I'm not totally aware of songs from the north or northeast regions.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. This is very insightful. It makes sense that I wouldn't be able to confine the music to the few genres I'm familiar with.

Thanks again. I'll probably end up getting into Brazilian music more now that the people who I'm presenting to lol

Brazil is HUGELY diverse country music-wise, and we have tons and tons of genres over here... But just a thing... kaled kalil pointed a lot of artists and their main genres, but a lot of the music he posted doesn't really represent the genre those artists are known for, you know? Dançando from Ivete has a lot of zouk to it, while Na Balada from Gustavo Lima is far more eletronic than sertanejo tends to be, and Anitta's Na Batida has a lot of influence of EDM over it. I would put those as just pop music, on the sense that they mix diferent genres in order to appeal to a larger market.

Now, some of my takes:

Axé - High energy afro-brazilian music. Another big names: Asa de Águia, Chiclete com Banana, Luís Caldas, Banda Eva.
Ivete Sangalo - Sorte Grande/Greatest Luck (Our biggest star right now, compared to Ayu, Namie, Madonna, Beyoncé... Ivete as kaled has pointed, is famous because of it, but she actually released on pretty much every mainstream genre we have and has music that goes from guittar riffs directly taken from metal to EDM influenced. This song from hers is more on the Axé side of things and is one of her biggest hits... If she was Ayu, it would be evolution)

Cláudia Leitte - Exttravasa/Overflow (as he said, she is kind of a national joke)

Daniela Mercury - Canto da Cidade/Song from the City(the one who made axé music mainstream back in the 90's)

Brazilian rock Another big names: Paralamas do Sucesso, Raul Seixas, Detonautas, Charlie Brown Jr.
Pitty - Na sua estante/On your shelf (his example was good, I just love this song )

Cazuza - Brasil/Brazil (known as one of our biggest "poets" from popular music, died young from AIDS, he is a music legend of ours)

Legião Urbana - Será/Maybe (Renato Russo, the vocalist and brain from the band is also a legend and also died of AIDS)

Rita Lee - Amor e Sexo/Love and Sex (our rock grandma, or rock dinosaur as she calls herself, she has been releasing hits consistently since the 60's and ended her final tour 3 years ago being arrested by calling cops pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~s... So, the rock'n'roll is strong on this one)

Sertanejo: Our country music. Traditionally, the biggest acts were duos... Until Luan Santana came. Another big names: Leonardo, Paula Fernantes, Thiago e Matheus.
Luan Santana - Eu não merecia isso/I didn't deserve this (Our pop prince and biggest young star... Lately his singles are mixing with EDM and funk and several other genres... He is from my city, so, I know some people who studied with him )

Gusttavo Lima - Que mal eu te fiz?/Did I wronged you? (He is market as kinda of a Luan clone, but is big on his own)

Zezé de Camargo & Luciano - É o amor/It's love (Music legends, around and big since the 90's. Zezé is the father of one relatively big act of ours)

Chitãozinho e Xororó - Evidências/Evidences (Music legends, around and big since the 80's. Xororó is the father of one of our biggest pop acts ever)

Funk Carioca: One of our own eletronic music genres... It's starting to get mainstream, but was born on Rio de Janeiro slums. "Funk Carioca" actually means "Funk born in Rio". All the artists I'm picking actually started on the underground funk scene. Other big names: Naldo, Mr Catra, Buchecha, Mc Leozinho
Valesca Popozuda - Beijinho no ombro/Kiss on the shoulder (She was the queen of the underground funk singing openly about sex on a pretty pornographic and tong-in-cheek way... Until this song made she enter the mainstream. The song title is a reference to a charm to repel jealously, kissing yourself on the shoulder)

Anitta - Show da Poderosas/The Divas Show (Probably the person resonsable for funk carioca becoming ultimately mainstream, she is our current pop princess. Her kind of funk is called "charme", a more melodical take on the genre)

Ludmilla - Fala mal de mim/Disses me (She is getting really big lately and is going through a proccess similar to the one Anitta went through.

On a next post I will talk a little about MPB, Samba, Pagode, Bossa Nova, Forró, Brega, Tecno-Brega and Pop. And I think this covers a little of our musical diversity that got on the mainstream.

Oh just now Culcha Candela are coming to my mind. If you search for some pop mixed with hiphop, raggea and electro.

And when I think of Culcha Candela I also think of Seeed:

Those bands are also popular/relevant.

Samba: This would be a pretty well-known brazillian genre if most people didn't confuse it to Salsa, Rumba or any other latin-music genre. Hikki's Letters kinda of reminds me of it. It hasn't really produced any huge name on the past 10 years.

Zeca Pagodinho - Deixa a vida me levar/Let life guide me (He is probably the lastest really big name on the genre. Active since the 90's.)

Alcione - Meu Ébano/My Ebony (Music legend, still pretty relevant and she's around since the 70's... This song was a big hit and it's from mid 90's)

Elza Soares - Lata D'agua/Water can (Music legend. Raised on the Rio de Janeiro slums, the daily life of those who suffer from poverty and racism are two of her recurrent themes. Singed the National Anthemn during the opening of the Pan-American games in Rio)

Pagode: Samba's most popular offspring nowadays, to the point of being considered a genre on it's own.

Thiaguinho - Desencana/Let it go (The first REALLY big name in pagode since the 90's when the genre turned mainstream, he is pretty much a superstar right now)

Alexandre Pires - Depois do Prazer/After pleasure (He was pretty much the face of Pagode during the 90's, until he spent years abroad trying to create a career on spanish language)

Parangolé - Rebolation/Shaking it (The song's title is actually a neologism, so, I can't really translate it. The vocalist is trying a solo career right now)

Forró: A genre born on the northeast region countryside.

Elba Ramalho - Sabiá/Thrush (Music legend. Around since the 70's)

Calcinha Preta - Você não vale nada mas eu gosto de você/You aren't worth of it but I love you

Falamansa - Rindo atoa/Laughting for no reason

Brega: Over the top, melodramatic and tragic, the cosest translation to brega (in this sense) I could think of is "cheesy"

Pablo - Homem não chora/Men don't cry (Pablo is huge on the north and northeast regions and is getting really big overall. He is the biggest current artist from the genre)

Banda Calypso - A Lua Me Traiu/The moon betrayed me (They were the face of brega to the rest of the country during the 00's, but after Joelma made some homophobic remarks, they popularity suffered. TBH, other artists, even Claudia Leitte, made worst remarks, but as they are considered a "lower class band" because of their genre, they got harder than most within the media)

Reginaldo Rossi - Garçom/Waiter (King of brega. Music legend)

Tecno-brega As cheesy and fun as brega, but eletronic! Born on the north region.
Gaby Amarantos - Xirley/Shirley (The one that made tecno-brega mainstream... It's struggling with her 2nd album)

Gang do Eletro - Velocidade do eletro/Eletro's Speed

Banda Uó - Shake de Amor/Love Shake (Actually a group of hipsters that took the genre on a "ironic" aproach)

MPB - Musica Popular Brasileira: Our "high class" intelectual pop. It's mostly a umbrella term for the pop music with deeper lyrics and sophisticated melodies and arragments. It also hasn't produced any huge name on the past decade.

Caetano Veloso - A Bossa Nova É Foda/Bossa Nova is Baddass (Music legend and most likely our biggest musician prestige-wise, even if he is pretty controversial)

Gilberto Gil - Andar com fé/Walking with faith (Music legend, and if Caetano isn't out biggest musician, Gil is. They are actually best friends... Gil was our National Culture Secretary once)

Maria Bethânia - Medley (Caetano's younger sister. Music legend and she is one of Brazil's top 3 singers, her position depending on you ask to)

Gal Costa - Miami Maculelê (The fourth part the group of friends from Bahia that took the country over like a storm, with the 3 others I cited before her. They actually had an act together back in the 70's. Music legend, and like Bethânia, one of our absolute top 3 singers)

Elis Regina - Como Nossos Pais/Like our parents (If France has Piaf and Japan has Hibari Misora, we have Elis. Together with Bethânia and Gal, she is considered our national voice, being a little ahead on the legendary stats for dying on a tragic way fairly young. At her peak she was so popular she could openly attack the dictatorship without being bothered because doing something with her would put the people against the governiment)

Ney Matogrosso - Rua da Passagem/Street of Flow (Music legend. And the reason why no brazillian person should be shocked by Lady Gaga, considering he is doing the outfit thing far longer than her. Even in his 70's he still can outperform most of our popstars)

Marisa Monte - Verdade, Uma Ilusão/Truth, an Illusion (If Ivete is somewhat Brazil' Ayu, Marisa is somewhat Brazil's Utada, even on the promotional strategy and being far more a musician than a performer. She is the younger huge MPB star, and a force of her own on the industry).

Bossa-Nova:This genre hasn't really produced any big artist in decades now, but it's our biggest music abroad, having influenced tons of artists around the world (even Utada and Shiina). It's our take on Jazz and It's possible that you know all of those already.

João Gilberto - Desafinado/Out of Tune (Bossa Nova's father. Music legend)

Tom Jobim - Águas de Março/Waters of March (Music legend)

Vinícius de Moraes - Garota de Ipanema/Girl from Ipanema (Poetry legend. He didn't sing often, but wrote a good amount of the Bossa Nova classics)

On a next post, pop music!

I want to add Helene Fischer to Chibi-Chans list. She seems to be really popular in Germany for the past few years. Her music style is Schlager( hit-songs) and "Atemlos durch die Nacht" is her biggest hit so far.

Haha well I thought about adding her to the list but... she's a schalger singer and not relevant in general... you know what I mean?
She's fir sure not a good representation when it comes to pop music in Germany. It would be like adding Rammstein to rhe list. And I thought about that too - Rammstein are more relevant than Helene Fischer I would say. But in general? Who cares about Rammstein besides the metal scene?

Edit: pleasw excuse any mispelling - I write from my mobile phone.... LOL

I have to correct you.
Schlager is extremly relevant here with pretty high sales and it is a form of pop music (take a look at german Wikipedia:http://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlager).
Though highest selling female Schlager singer is Andrea Berg, Helene Fischer is just No.2.
But as I don't listen to Schlager, I can't recommend you any songs, I'm sorry. xD

And btw. Volksmusik actually has the highest percentage of music sales in Germany and Schlager is normally included.

Well I would say the Scorpions are the biggest music act we have abroad.^^ But Rammstein come after the Scorpions.

But regarding Schlager. No. It's not relevant at all. Schlager has its fans and sometimes when people are really drunk even younger peope listen to it. But it's not relevant or popular. Helene Fischer had one big hit with "Atemlos", but one hit song does not make someone relevant in general. No one will ever listen to Helene Fischer or Andrea Berg and say they had any influence to the music scene in Germany. They simply never had and never will. Just because it has high sales doesn't mean a lot of people listen to it. I mean, who listens to Schlager/Volksmusik? People over 50+. And that's exactly why its sales are high in comparison. Younger people just download music or listen to it via youtube. But no one gives a shit about Schlager besides people over 50+.

Edit: I wouldn't say the Scorpions are really relevant today in Germany. But everyone knows them and from a historical point of view they are pretty interesting.

So, pop music, and after that I will stop spamming this thread xD

I will divide this into 2 groups:

Acts that can be considered pop music acts all the way
Most music of those is so processed you can't really put them on a genre without them being all crafted to get heavy airplay. It would be pretty hard to actually point a genre they belong in other than pop.

Sandy & Junior - A Lenda/The Legend (Our biggest entirelly pop act ever, probably, they are the daughter and the son of Xororó from the sertanejo duo. At one time they were so big they tried an English debut, and it was an epic failure. Disbanded.)

Sandy - Sim/I do (Sandy is basically our Britney Spears without a breakdown. She was on the media very young, the country watched her growing up, she is basically Brazil's coletive good daughter, she isn't that much respected as a musician but she also refuses to let her career die)

Wanessa Camargo - Amor, amor/Love, love (If Sandy was Britney, Wanessa was Christina, but with vocal inverse abilities. Wanessa is the daugher of Zezé di Camargo, and if Sandy is at least respected as a vocalist and as a pop music force, Wanessa is pretty much a joke)

Wanessa - Sticky Dought (Or was until she took her last name way and started singing in English to please brazillian gay boys that wished they were born in the USA or England. Those niche aside, nobody really cares about her)

Roberto Carlos - Esse cara sou eu/This guy is me (Brazillian Elvis, without the drugs and with the same shitty quality control. He is called "The King" over here and from times to times releases a song that becomes a smash hit)

Gretchen - Conga La Conga (Probably the first brazillian POP act to ever exist, Gretchen lives nowadays from the controverse generated from her family, the hits from her first album and for being one of the most gif-able people alive... You guys may even have sawn of of her gifs being used as emotes in other forums. She did pretty much everything a person can do to stay relevant on media, from political career to porn movies)

Acts that oscilate from pop music to reginal genres
All of those were actually mentioned before... But they ARE considered popstars and a lot of their material can only be classified as pop music.

Ivete Sangalo

Claudia Leitte

Luan Santana

Gusttavo Lima

Valesca

Anitta

Ludmilla

Gaby

Well one Chilean singer I've always liked is Ana Tijoux (she sometimes goes by Anita Tijoux). She does a mix of music like pop R&B, and hip-hop. She's fairly popular, though in terms of overall popularity she's nowhere near the level of some of the international singers like Jesse and Joy, Enrique Iglesias, or Shakira (For a while it was basically impossible to go out in Santiago and not hear either 'bailando' or 'Can't Remember to Forget You').

Back on topic though most of the songs from her newest album "Vengo" are really good and a few songs actually incorporate traditional Andean musical instruments. Anyway a couple songs I'd recommend are:

Somos Sur

Shock

1977

Wow, you guys are amazing *tears* I wish I could bake y'all cookies and send them to you.

Anyway, I'm still going through the many videos and it's all really great. I also appreciate all of your descriptions, explanations, opinions, etc. It gives me such a better idea of the contemporary music industry and artists in these places which is awesome. It's something I'm very ignorant of obviously, and I felt like I got nowhere with just googling things.

Also, not completely related but...

Why is the Claudia girl a joke in Brazil lol?
Anyway, I totally wish there were more newer Bossa Nova acts because I'm totally getting into it lately.
The amount of genres is so fascinating to me.

And Chibi-Chan, I feel you on the hip-hop. As much as I love the genre, it's nice to find musicians in it without awful messages.

@tbarnes I totally swooned over Ana. Very cool.

Yeah I'm always glad when I discover an artist who never made a single homophobic and/or sexist song.

I would be curious which artists you'd present in the end. So let us know!
And if you need any further help, just let me know.
