I think I read somewhere that it's her mother's last name, because she wanted to track down her father, but she didn't know his last name. Something strange like that. That could have been a rumor though. So, not sure.
It'll be great if someone could clarify!

Hamasaki is the same surname of her mother, so I assume she doesn't have her father's

If that's true that's a bit strange, because Ayumi's mother could of easily told her. (I'd assume she'd know the last name anyway).

If I'm not wrong, when a Japanese woman gets married with a Japanese man, she gets the surname of her husband, leaving behind the surname she had before. In another words, Hamasaki is both the surname of Ayu's father and mother

Since her father left when she was like 3(?), it's possible that Mariko could've changed their last names after he left.

I'm not even sure if Mariko got married with her father, I think Hamasaki is the original surname of her mom.

Japanese legal naming is weird. When a woman marries she has to legally change her last name (don't get me started). Obviously children get that name as well. When they divorce, however, most women I know revert to their maiden name...and if the father is out of the picture, so do the children. Also, if a woman (with children in full custody) remarries, then everyone (including the children) get the new name. Japan is very centered on family units having the same name for their records.
At the moment I believe Mariko's maiden name is Hamasaki, that she switched back to after divorcing Ayu's father. Of course it could also be her father's name, but from what I understand it would be a bit weird. |

I believe it's her mother's surname. Why would they want to use the last name of the husband/father that left them behind?

so...
A. ayu's parents got married, the father's last name was hamasaki, they all took it, and after getting divorced, they never changed it back. or B. ayu's parents got married, the father's last name is unknown, they all took it, and after getting divorced the mother decided to go back to her maiden name and change ayu's to hamasaki as well. Interesting.

I also think, it is the name from the father.. and because, her parents got married, it is now the name of her mother to.

We actually don't know for sure if her parents were married. We just know they were together, had a child, then he left when Ayu was 3. So yea. I still say it's her mothers surname.

I would think Ayu has access to her father's real name, it should have been on her birth certificate, right?
Maybe she has just had no interest in looking for him and doesn't want to know, seeing as he never contacted her again after the night he left. |
