While reviewing albums... Microphone's lyrics, about Max?
Perhaps Microphone is more significant in Ayu's personal life than we think. I think this song is about Max Matsuura! I think this song might be Ayu finally coming to terms with who she is, she is a musician and loves and hates it at the same time
"I won't lose my way anymore, I have no regrets It was my destiny that I met you Because you always give and teach me The meaning and the significance of my existence" She doesn't regret becoming and artist, it was her destiny to meet him, he does teach her, he is her mentor and boss, and he gave her the main significance of her life "But sometimes I hate you so much That I don't even want to see your face" Correct me if I'm wrong but Ayu was single at the time as far as we know so I can only imagine Max as the only guy she saw often at the time. "If a perfect melody exists I don't want to meet it yet" She doesn't want to reach her musical limit because she'll lose to her what is her whole life, her music she said on CNN "music is my life, without it I am nothing" "Though it's true that there were days When I felt my limits Turned my back on everything and crouched down" she considered retiring after A Best. tell me why tell me why I don't know I don't know (I won't tell u why) Change is very nice But it doesn't mean losing yourself It's just so, on the condition that you have the root You've held on up to now and will hold on hereafter Though it's true that there were days When I felt my limits Turned my back on everything and crouched down I won't lose my way anymore, I have no regrets It was my destiny that I met you Because you always give and teach me The meaning and the significance of my existence tell me why tell me why I don't know I don't know (I won't tell u why) But sometimes I hate you so much That I don't even want to see your face And I think to myself "Never come into my sight" But it doesn't mean that I can be apart from you After all, I want you to be my side most and anytime * Pushed by gravity, pulled by attractive force I met you by necessity I can't go against you, but just admire you I know that I'm not myself without you If a perfect melody exists I don't want to meet it yet I won't lose my way anymore, I have no regrets It was my destiny that I met you Because you give and teach me The meaning and the significance of my existence * (repeat) tell me why tell me why

She didn't consider retiring after releasing A BEST.
I swear that must be the all time #1 Ayu myth. Not even kidding. Need Ayu Mythbusters around here. |

in an interview she said that she was worried because the label forced her to release a best album, because that could mean you won't be releasing anything after that anymore. after all that pressure she wanted to leave, but the album was such a huge success, she stayed.
she has stated a couple of times she wanted to quit, but people are not really letting her. avex depends too much on her, so ahe has a lot of responsibility. |

Hasn't Ayu actually said "this song is about my relationship with music", or words to that effect already?

^This.
sitara: I think you are wrong. Her statement meant she thought people should only release best's when they are retiring, so she was upset at avex forcing her to do something that went against her belief. She never wanted to retire at that time or because of it. |

Like relmy said, Ayu confirmed Microphone is about her relationship with music in an interview. (I don't remember which one. It's probably on Misa-chan's blog.)

oooooooh, so I was partially right. Well, having not knowing that the lyrics really sound like they are a shot at Max, but they're not.

It's a love song to the microphone (and the stage, and the singing career, and music, etc).
Ayu considered changing labels or retiring after A Best, but she openly talked about this before... She also said once Dearest was the song where she discovered she loves singing... And about the "best" thing... On Japan, it's way too common for most artists to debut, get famous, releasing +-3 albums after getting famous, one per consecutive year, releasing a best, that will be their best selling album most of the time, and becoming nobody after that... So, on their market, the first best after the fame symbols the end of the relevance, and the final hit on ones profitable musical career... It is also a way for the recording label to ending the artist spotlight before the public does so... In the end of the day, her problem with A Best is that she knew what they were planing to do to her next^^ |

If you watch Making of Microphone PV, Ayu said herself at (almost) the end of the video that Microphone isn't talking about human (something like "hito janai yo" which I'm pretty sure that she said "the anata here is not about human"), so yeah.
Based on interview, this song is related to her relationship with the music.

Yeah, pretty certain these lyrics are just about her career with music.
