It has not been sold a lot like other hits (min. 417,210 according to wikipedia) but it's definitely VERY popular. It's a trademark ayu song like evolution, Boys & Girls and M. (It's also my favorite song)

So I say YES!

I would say it's well-known, but I don't think it's quite on the level of Boys&Girls, M, or SEASONS with the general public. SURREAL is more of a prog rock song than a 'pop' song because of its structure, imo. The single itself didn't sell as well as some of her I am... singles, but to be fair it was released the same day as Duty IIRC.

It's undoubtedly a fan favorite.

I always thought her biggest hits were the concert staples (Boys & Girls, evolution, SURREAL) along with Dearest & M. But I would guess the sales and Japanese public opinion would really tell for sure.

i think it is a stape for the fans at concerts and her fans love the song... but is it her biggest hit?
I think the single that sold the most was A... that was four songs...
stand alone single i do believe was seasons?
Which might be her most successful. (without counting double 3x, or 4x a-sides)

LOL, yes I always laugh at this. I remember arguing with someone about it on YT as well. They swore up and down it was her. All I said was, check her OFFICIAL discography, it's NOT there. And then suddenly they shut up. xD

It is one of her most well known among fans, but in general the Japanese public don't know it that well. It's definitely not on the level of M and Boys & Girls etc.

Although it's not reflected in sales, isn't AUDIENCE more of a fan favourite than SURREAL at least with Japanese fans? SURREAL seems a lot like a song Western fans would like while AUDIENCE is very Japanese friendly.

About the song, I will never understand why Ayu performs it as a happy concert track. Am I the only one who sees SURREAL kind of sad and nostalgic?

^ Yeah.

But she is giving courage to the one who's listening to this song. And perhaps is being happy / optimistic the effective way?

Somehow, I also think it would be hard to sing this really sad. Considering that the instrumentals are pretty fast.

I can only speculate, but seeing how she was on her commercial peak when it was released, I daresay the song's pretty much an ayu classic the moment it was released (oh dear does that even make sense); I imagine people would immediately identify her with SURREAL and vice versa.

I think the song is all kinds of awesome. I like the unusual composition of verse-verse-verse-climax-climax-CLIMAX-CLIMAX and the dramatic music just successfully adds to its Godawesomeness. It's just a shame that it's getting difficult for her to perform live. I know nobody asked this but my favorite recent-ish SURREAL performance is the one in CDL 0506 (and that's already seven years ago DEAR GOD); her voice was still okay and the editing made it perfect.

All the love for SURREAL.

it's popular and classic, but it's not on the level of evolution, M and SEASONS.

I love this song too btw

Yesssssssss, this annoys me so much. I hate that she performs SURREAL every concert NOT BECAUSE she's performing it so damn much, but because she's performing it like it's a happy, upbeat, fun song when it's anything but. >_>
