I believe the acticles mention that Akiko wanted Ayu to take her place for the Red-and-White event, seeing as how Ayu's a respected person to her. I'm not 100% sure on this, though, since auto-translators only do so much...

wada akiko is just saying that she wanted ayu to be the last to sing in the kouhaku end of the year show. She's suprised that SMAP is the last instead of someone else...like ayu. It's kinda an honor to sing last. She also states that she's suprised that DA PUMP and matsuda seiko aren't performing.

the countdown thing probably is one of the reasons. Smap, like Ayudearest1 said, did sell the most singles this year. the lyrics of their song was very good...and that was part of the reason it sold so many copies.
...Yada akiko is a whole different person...she's actually young and pretty (lol)
