Memorial Address question
The song lyrics translations are about someone's who has passed away and I was wondering if the song was written for anyone? I was wondering since she was crying when she sung it at the Arena Tour 03-04.

A lot of people say that this song was dedicated to her father she never knew.

No one actually knows, it's ALL complete speculation. I've heard multiple rumors: it's about her father, it's about a friend who died, it's about her father who died, etc.

im positive i've read that she actually knew him- he left her when she was 4 or something like that (Teddy Bear and SCAR are songs about him so it's impossible that she didn't know him) |

I'd say the theory that it's about her father is actually NOT unfounded, especially since it followed "teddy bear" in concert... the mood change was VERY slight, basically just from sad to angry. There's also the theory that she was MUCH closer friends with Huge (that remixer) than anyone knew, but that one seems much more unlikely since she was with Tomoya Nagase (and the song talks about love, but whether it's family or romantic love isn't really said) and the date he died was in the same month as that mysterious date on the mirror, but not the same actual date, it was much much earlier in June '03. On the other hand, if her father had died in June 2003, she would have been notified by the hospital whether she knew him or not since she's his next of kin. And the lyrics DO make sense that she's singing to someone whose death took her by surprise but it was someone she REALLY didn't have enough time on earth with. This is a sharp contrast to "ever free" which was about someone she'd spent alot of time with, and had said everything she needed to say to them, and therefore she could only mourn their passing, and we've learned that "ever free" was about her grandmother. It does help to have a basis of comparison when analyzing "Memorial address".

Ayu said in an interview (I think I have it somewhere....but here's the gist from my memory) that at the time of making the Mini-album, she had a rush of feelings similar to her time when she wrote "teddy bear". She thought it was very odd to have those feelings again, and wrote "Memorial address". "teddy bear" is almost 100% about her father, and if she wrote "Memorial address" with those feelings, then we can deduce that it is about her father. :x (Let me find the interview hehe)

I like Hugo Perry's speculation. ^^

I never realized until now that "ever free," one of my favorite songs, is about someone's death. Now it all just clicked, with the custom of laying a single white flower down in respect, and being crowded out of "the black line." That's sad, but, like the song says, beautiful.
I'm not sure about Memorial address. But if we don't know by now, I doubt we ever will. A song nearly two albums old (though a sure-to-be classic) probably won't come up in future interviews, at least not directly. About the mysterious date in the mirror, isn't that just the day before July 1st? Ayu said that's the single most anticipated day of the entire year for her, because it's when she and her friends have a tradition of getting together for fun in the summer. |

evolusean, I actually didn't think of that! I completely forgot about that. That date is when she goes to HANABI (the club/bar she goes to with friends every year), which is where the name of the song HANABI comes from... and "July 1st" is about the morning-after feeling after that happy visit. ^^ Would make more sense for that to be the case than an anniversary of someone's death, given the peaceful look on ayu's face while she's over the mirror in the picture.
