Amuro Namie (安室奈美恵) is a Japanese "Hip-Pop" (Hip-Hop / Pop) artist from Okinawa. She debuted in a eurobeat group called the SUPER MONKEYS comprised of her and her classmates from the Okinawa Actors' School in 1992 with the single Koi no Cute Beat / Mister U.S.A.. Amuro became the leader of the group, and found success after their cover of TRY ME ~Watashi wo Shinjite~, which peaked at #8. In 1996, Amuro switched to avex trax and debuted with the single Body Feels EXIT, with her first avex album selling over 3.3 million copies. Her biggest single, the ballad CAN YOU CELEBRATE?, was the top single of 1997. After marriage and personal tragedy, Amuro continued to adopt a more R&B/hip-hop based style of music. She has sold over 27,322,155 copies in Japan alone.

安室、刷新！２年半ぶりアルバムで新・安室奈美恵を展開
歌手の安室奈美恵（３２）が、１２月１６日に２年半ぶりとなる新アルバム「ＰＡＳＴ＜ＦＵＴＵＲＥ」（パス ト・フューチャー）を発売する。
３月下旬から制作を開始。「すべてを空にして新しいスタートを切りたい」という思いから、コンセプトは「今 までを脱ぎ捨て、新しい『安室奈美恵』を展開していく」。
アルバムのタイトル通り、過去より未来を意識したものに。そのため、同作のジャケット写真は、安室が自身の 過去のジャケ写を破るという斬新なデザインになった。最新シングル「ＷＩＬＤ／Ｄｒ．」を始め、ヴィダルサ スーンのＣＭ曲「ＣＯＰＹＴＨＡＴ」など１２曲を収録。来年４月から全国ツアーに突入する。

Promotion:
The first songs excluding "Wild" and "Dr." to be promoted from the album were "My Love" and "Copy That" which both appeared in new commercials for cosmetics company, Vidal Sassoon. They premiered on the web first and later on television in October 2009. "My Love" would later make it's radio premiere on J-Wave's Groove Line on October 27. Both "My Love" and "Copy That" were released as ringtones online on November 18. Two more songs from the album, "Fast Car" and "The Meaning Of Us" will also make their radio premieres on November 23 and 24. Besides radio promotion, four new music videos have been produced for "Fast Car," "The Meaning Of Us," "Love Game," and "Defend Love." All four videos will appear on a DVD included with the album along with music videos for the previously released "Wild" and "Dr.".

In November, a poster promoting the new album began to appear across Japan. It bears the image of a woman, her face hidden, ripping a photo from Amuro's famous Best Fiction album shoot. The image is being used both online and offline for the album, with more photos of the poster being more and more ripped, cumulating to the releases of the covers, where the poster is half-ripped, revealing Amuro's face.

Production:
Past < Future is expected to be released in Japan on December 16, 2009 as a singular 12-track CD release plus a dual disc set with the album and a separate DVD containing several music videos. Amuro first revealed in the March 2009 issue of S Cawaii that she was preparing a new album which she would begin recording during her Best Fiction Tour. In the interview, she would also confirm that the direction of the album would be different from her previous album. Confirmation of the impending release of Amuro's ninth studio album occurred several months later when media outlets began to report new commercials with new songs by the singer would appear not in a new single, but a new album towards the end of the year.[3]

Of the twelve tracks being released on the album, eleven tracks including "Wild," Dr.," "Fast Car," "My Love," "Copy That," "Bad Habit," "Love Game," "The Meaning Of Us," "Shut Up, "Defend Love," and "Steal My Night" were announced on her official site on October 22.[1] The final track, "First Timer" a collaboration with hip hop group Doberman Inc. was announced at a later date.

Unlike Play which was produced solely by Michico and T.Kura of Giant Swing and Nao'ymt, Amuro sought other writers and producers for this project. Dsign Music, a Scandinavian production team was the first to reveal that they had written new material for Amuro on their official website in August 2009.[4] In a blog entry, songwriter/producer, Hiro, who has written for other artist including Kumi Koda and J Soul Brothers, confirmed that he produced "My Love".

Also I was typing out my review of this album but I got too depressed to finish it because I hate having to type negative things about Namie so I'll just say I'm not satisfied with this album and leave it at that. I'm like 100% satisfied with her magazine shoots promoting the album though.

FAST CAR is just irritating. I think it's about music - that instrument is just annoying and even though the song is catchy, I don't like it and can't listen it to the end ><
COPY THAT is very good, catchy and I love it since I heard it for the first time in that commercial. I wish there was the voice saying "Vidal Sassoon" at the end, it's sexy XD
LOVE GAME is also amazing, I love "I'm lovin you" parts =)
Bad Habit is just...terrible. XD I hate Namie's engrish and the way she's singing "Bad Habit".
Steal my Night shares the same destiny like Bad Habit, but this song sounds to me like it doesn't have a refren o.O I only like that "arabian" sound in the background, or whatever it is.
FIRST TIMER feat. DOBERMAN INC - boring.
WILD is catchy and nice, but considering the fact that I've been listening to it almost 9 months, it got boring =)
Dr. is still my fav and I love it so much!
Shut Up is just great.
My Love - too repetitive.
The Meaning Of Us - I finally like this song =) At first was just some boring rnb ballad, but now I can relax while I listen to it.
Defend Love or Dr. II is also amazing, it's not better than Dr. but I love its dark side and music!

So PAST < FUTURE isn't bad, it's very good actually. But I can say that I prefer PLAY, because on PLAY I love all songs while on this album... well, you can see. Also, I accepted the fact that Namie won't have anymore deep, meaningful lyrics, the last one probably was Baby Don't Cry, but it's good for fun =)

everything except for COPY THAT. I just can't get into this song.. whenever I get into it something weird happens that turns me off lol. and not feeling Steal my Night either..

Wow almost finished listening and I just love what I hear!!! I wish some of the album tracks were a bit more catchy in the melody department but the arrangments are fantastic!!!

I agree....I do like the arrangements...but the only song that has managed to ingrain itself in my head, is COPY THAT lol and I don't even like it that much...but man...it sure was in my head after I listened to it lol

I'm uh....a little...underwhelmed with this album...seems like a bunch of fillers + the boys 2 men song lol

so I don't know...the songs will probably grow on me, probably no until the tour comes out...and I'll listen to it some more.

Well, if you want meaningful lyrics, there's always artists like Ayumi, Ringo Shiina, Gackt, etc.
But with Namie I listen to her music cause it's catchy.

I think Bad Habit is the strongest album song, together with The Meaning of Us and LOVE GAME. Worst is definitely steal my night.

I like PLAY better than PAST < FUTURE, but this album is VERY good still. I don't really like Bad Habit and Steal My Night at the moment, they sound like a bit of a filler at the moment, but I'm sure I will grow to like them later. xD

Is it the best album of 2009? Maybe. XD

EDIT: Oh does anyone like how they changed the ending to COPY THAT? I hated the woooo wooo wooo in the leak earlier, so I'm so happy with it. XD

yeah...I didn't want to say it...but that's the way I'm kinda leaning too.

Although I love Dr. and WILD...they're a bit out of place for me on this album...which is heightened by the fact that they're consecutive tracks...

It's like it's own little section. I think that, say they were the most important tracks, and she split them up, like one in the beginning and one closer to the end...and really worried about the transition...we could have some really interesting songs...
