Number 1 greatest song of all time!

Right, this may sound harsh here, but the rules are:

1) ONLY 1 song allowed
2) don't post saying "I don't know, it's too hard" and then leaving it at that.
3) Say a little about the song, maybe explain why it's your favourite
4) not a rule, but let's see how varied things get

____

Right, after MUCH time and thought, i've finally decided on my most favourite song of all time. I was always under the impression that it would be an Ayu song, no contest, but i was mistaken.

My favourite songs, that i don't think i'll ever get bored of is...

Koda Kumi - 1000 no Kotoba

I seriously love this song, and hearing the (almost) 7 minute orchestral version has just made my mind up. It's perfect imo, amazing vocals, great melody, powerful and touching all in one.

Koda, I thank you for this song

Man, this IS a hard one. I decided on a song that has a beautiful, catchy melody, genre-crossing within it, lyrics that can make you cry, and an arrangement that's way too hard for any band to ever effectively cover.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.

Now, Queen are by no means a favorite band of mine, but this song is truly epic. The lyrics are full of anger, sadness, poetry, symbolism, and emotional adventure. The melody is unforgettable if you've heard the song even once, the harmonies in the vocals are deep, multifaceted, and beautiful (not to mention Freddy Mercury had one of the clearest, cleanest, sweetest, and most voluptuous voices in the history of rock & roll) and the instruments are impossible to play exactly the same twice.

Faye Wong did a decent cover of it during her HK Scenic Tour, but it still wasn't dead on, which does lead me to believe that the song can't ever be fully emulated even with LOTS of talent & practice.

On top of it, and this was a VERY important criterion for me, I'm still not tired of the song after hearing it over and over for years and years now. It's still good, and as I get older I hear more in it that I like.

...I'm shocked as heck that I picked an english-language song for this.

WOW THIS IS SOOOO EASY

Changes By Tupac Shakur

This si the greatest song of all time because it touched to many people and spoke the truth about Rasicm,Poverty,How People Judge each out, and what it like when u grow up in the streets. This song made me realize how the world judges me not only by my attitude but by my skin color as.

Lyrics:

Artist: 2Pac
Album: 2Pac Greatest Hits (Amaru/Interscope)
Song: Changes

Come on come on
I see no changes wake up in the morning and I ask myself
is life worth living should I blast myself?
I'm tired of bein' poor & even worse I'm black
my stomach hurts so I'm lookin' for a purse to snatch
Cops give a damn about a negro
pull the trigger kill a pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~pretty pony~ he's a hero
Give the crack to the kids who the hell cares
one less hungry mouth on the welfare
First ship 'em dope & let 'em deal the brothers
give 'em guns step back watch 'em kill each other
It's time to fight back that's what Huey said
2 shots in the dark now Huey's dead
I got love for my brother but we can never go nowhere
unless we share with each other
We gotta start makin' changes
learn to see me as a brother instead of 2 distant strangers
and that's how it's supposed to be
How can the Devil take a brother if he's close to me?
I'd love to go back to when we played as kids
but things changed, and that's the way it is

Bridge w/ changing ad libs
Come on come on
That's just the way it is
Things'll never be the same
That's just the way it is
aww yeah
Repeat

I see no changes all I see is racist faces
misplaced hate makes disgrace to races
We under I wonder what it takes to make this
one better place, let's erase the wasted
Take the evil out the people they'll be acting right
'cause both black and white is smokin' crack tonight
and only time we chill is when we kill each other
it takes skill to be real, time to heal each other
And although it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready, to see a black President, uhh
It ain't a secret don't conceal the fact
the penitentiary's packed, and it's filled with blacks
But some things will never change
try to show another way but you stayin' in the dope game
Now tell me what's a mother to do
bein' real don't appeal to the brother in you
You gotta operate the easy way
"I made a G today" But you made it in a sleazy way
sellin' crack to the kid. " I gotta get paid,"
Well hey, well that's the way it is

Bridge

Talking:
We gotta make a change...
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
and let's change the way we treat each other.
You see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do
what we gotta do, to survive.

And still I see no changes can't a brother get a little peace
It's war on the streets & the war in the Middle East
Instead of war on poverty they got a war on drugs
so the police can bother me
And I ain't never did a crime I ain't have to do
But now I'm back with the blacks givin' it back to you
Don't let 'em jack you up, back you up,
crack you up and pimp slap you up
You gotta learn to hold ya own
they get jealous when they see ya with ya mobile phone
But tell the cops they can't touch this
I don't trust this when they try to rush I bust this
That's the sound of my tool you say it ain't cool
my mama didn't raise no fool
And as long as I stay black I gotta stay strapped
& I never get to lay back
'Cause I always got to worry 'bout the pay backs
some buck that I roughed up way back
comin' back after all these years
rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat that's the way it is uhh

Bridge 'til fade

Hmm... i'm sorry but this thread is kinda making me sad ^^;; I mean, shouldn't songs by people like the Beatles or David Bowie, or modern but influential stuff like Nirvana or Bjork, be on this list? I hate to say it but maybe people who listen to more music should be contributing here... I'm familiar with all the songs you guys have said and I don't think any of them are particularly GREAT songs. Good maybe, entertaining even. But not GREAT. Songs on this list should be influential to both fans AND the music world, ground-breaking sorts of things. I think "Infection", from banfan's list, is really the closest thing to being a GREAT song that anyone's said so far... =\ I don't mean to sound elitist about music but I've been a die-hard fan of all kinds of music in general for years and years, and I just don't see alot of these songs as pieces of artistic and musical greatness.

you're kinda right...

as for my all time favourite; it's impossible for me to choose but i think ot would be one of those:

- shiina ringo "yamini furu ame"
- pj harvey "this mess we're in" or any song by her
- poe "hey pretty" (both solo version and yhe one from the video, with her brother)

Um dude, i'm asking for people all time favourite song, not the greatest song ever created. This is all down to opinion, people don't have to class, say, a Beatles track as their number 1 favourite song just because the band were influential, it's just down to what they're favourite song IS. Everyone is allowed to base their decision on whatever reason they like. hell, even Bootylicious by Destiny's Child could crop up here. Not a marvel of musical genius by any terms, but if it's someone's favourite song, who are we to judge?

no offence , but mean it or not that sounds really elitist. because what makes a great song is simply just up to the listener. it's ridicilous to think you could say for others what makes an "artistic and musical greatness" regardless how much music you've listened or not. everyone decides for themselves , it's as simple as that.

i personally think "influental music" is just another way of saying really popular music

My personal greatest song of all time is "IS IT YOU?" by hitomi. I just feel her performance is so emotional & just perfect , I'll never get bored of it

Damn, there's no way to decide lol. Although I agree with the Queen, I also agree with Tim plus other favorites I have. I'll try and decide though.

You should change the title of the thread then... it's kind of misleading.

That, and i think picking your favorite of all time is alot harder cuz taste changes every once in awhile. Picking what people think is the GREATEST song of all time is easier, as it might not be their favorite (it wasn't mine), but it fits criteria that makes them think it's the greatest song ever written.

This is really hard. I guess I'll go with Gackt-Vanilla. Even though it's about sex, it's a good song(I'm always attracted to those kind of songs). He sings about somehwta of a poetic way. You would never know unless you read the lyrics.

I'll have to go with Boheamian Rhapsody too.

All the reasons Delirium-Zer0 said, but its actually my fave song myself lol

Maybe a close second would be Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles

Dearest from Ayumi Hamasaki without any doubt. It has been my favourite for over three years now.

I would have never thought someone would share my GREATEST SONG OF ALL TIME.

For me it is 'Dearest' as well, by of course Hamasaki Ayumi. A great song to me has to do nothing with being groundbreaking or completely unique, but it has to do with the meaning of the song and the message that the listener recieves and to me I got the message of pure and divine love and devotion. This song just means the world to me and one day I hope that I can convey the feelings in this song to my loved one.

About the whole controversy about a "great song", I am personally tired of hearing people say that "GREAT SONGS" were all the oldies and really famous names because I think music is great if it really means something to you and all those artist you mentioned and the Beatles and Queens and whatnot definitely are AMAZING but I guess I wasn't around in their time period or what not to really feel what they were all about and their music. It really depends on time period and stuff too, well in my opinion. Many of today's music is probably really generic but it is pretty hard to do something extremely unique when almost everything has been tried, NOT EVERYTHING but a good deal of it. Anyways I hope I'm making any sense but yeah... ^^;; I LOVE POP music hahaha and it does mean a lot to me, their messages maybe shallow at times and sugar coated but they mean a lot to me and so they are what I consider GREAT songs. (I'm crazy don't even bother listening to me hahaha)

God, this question is really killing my brain, but I suppose I'll just it down to five (which are in no particular order).

Mizerable - Gackt

I absolutely adore this song and the video for it. But it's specifically the lyrics of the song that really catch me. I absolutely love his style of writing. *glomp*

Forgiveness - Ayumi Hamasaki

This is the very first Ayumi song I ever heard (not counting Poker Face because I can't really remember it). It's because of this song that I got so into Ayu's music. Not to mention the fact that it is such an incredibly beautiful song!

Sakura Drops - Utada Hikaru

This song is like no other I have ever heard. It just flows so incredibly well. The first time I heard this song (which was actually on DDR), I immediately fell in love with it. Of course, it took me about a year or so to actually figure out what it was. ^^;

Wait & See ~Risk~ - Utada Hikaru

This is definitely one of my favorite songs. *nod nod* For one thing, I think this song might be the one I'm best at singing. The thing is...I can't really explain why I like this one so much. *shrug*

Infection - Chihiro Onitsuka

I absolutely love Chihiro Onitsuka (even though I've only heard one of her songs...XD). I basically fell in love with this song when I first heard it as well. It's just such a...somehow powerful song. It just keeps growing and growing...I love it!

Psycheledicodust: I'm TOTALLY with you on Eleanor Rigby. That song is amazing. "Space Oddity" by David Bowie is way up there for me too.

when I first heard this song I cried my heart out... it's so touching, so sad and SO real.
Courtney Love has the perfect voice for screaming, and when she's screaming out her pain and sorrows, gosh, it's beyond everything...

so, cry with me and give it a try... download here: http://s39.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2...A3TQILFQEH5NT3
