I'm very biased towards Ayumi Hamasaki, so I won't pick any of her songs.

Madonna - Material Girl, to me it's more or less symbolising the definition of pop.
Michael Jackson - They Don't Care About Us
Gackt - OASIS

Also remember that the definition of Pop music, as in Popular music, includes all kinds of music.

I'm afraid I disagree... in 1999 with the raise of the Boy Bands and all the drowing of POP music there was a communicate from the music ...errr... i don't know how u call it in english... caouncil? association? whatever ... the thing is that they accepted POP (that should be written with capital letters) as a seperate music genre so from then on there would be 'popular' music and 'POP' music, that's just like ROCK: one thing is Rock 'n Roll and a very different thing is all the other ROCK genres. All this is in music history books

You're both (that's you and immel, who you quoted) halfway right. Pop is a very broad genre, though it's often only considered as the kind of music that is, indeed, on the Billboard Pop Chart. However, like I said, pop is a very broad genre, and includes pretty much everything leave for a couple of genres (e.g. jazz, avant-garde, classical music). Recently, though, I've heard lots about that jazz, classical music, and so on, can be included. It counts as popular music because people listen to it. Especially, there's radio channels with classical music only.

Technically popular music includes everything that a kind of majority listens to.

I think it's about time they actually split it into the genre "pop", which would include the most basic pop sound and anything close enough to be called pop.

And the term "popular music", that includes everything of what pop originally is/means/meant.

Genres is mainly for the ease of categorizing, for the music resellers, anyway .

Nothing is certain, especially when it's all so much based on personal taste. It fluctuates with the opinions of the majority, like everything else that has anything to do with language.

orenji, Spice Girls are very far from starting anything related to pop, about as far as you can get, haha.

Michael Jackson was proclaimed the King of Pop long before Spice Girls was even planned to be forged into a group.
