Namie, on the other hand, probably just isn't very good at songwriting, which is okay cuz she makes up for it in other ways (nice magazine shoots).

Just because someone writes their lyrics doesn't mean that the quality of music is going to be great. As I said before, take Avril Lavigne. Anyone can write about their feelings on a piece of paper and call it art.

Says who? Namie has said that she can relate to her lyrics, and as stated before, she does have some songs which she wrote herself, namely "Say the Word". The reason why she doesn't like using her own lyrics is because she's shy and she knows that people will analyze them to know more about her life. Plus she can't do RnB lyrics anyway.

So does Namie, but for reasons that I've already stated, she chooses not to write all of her lyrics, and that's fine too. It does not by any means make her music less sincere. Besides, why have respect for Hikki and Ayu for that yet not have respect for Namie for being able to do something that about 95% of other j-pop artists can't do, namely sing and dance exceptionally at the same time? Ayu and Hikki can't do that, guess I need to stop respecting them for what they can't do instead of respecting them for what they CAN do.

Yeah, I do believe that Namie does have the talent for writing lyrics and she has shown that on the tracks that she does write. But she is intensely private and shy and I think that is the reason she doesn't write lyrics as much or it's highly possible that she does but does not take credit for them.

I do wish that she would write more though since she certainly has the life experience to draw on and some huge tragedies in her life that I think could make for some very moving lyrics - but it seems she would rather keep those feelings private. In a way I admire her for that, even if at the same time I want her to write about them.

While I prize great songs and writing more than I do great dancing. I definitely have to give Namie her props here - she is by far the best artist I have seen when it comes to singing and dancing at the same time.

I would say that BoA does it better, but that's just me. But Namie is right behind her.

I said she wrote Say The Word. Just because someone doesn't like their own lyrics doesn't mean that other people will find them bad as well. Everyone is their greatest critic. She also wrote a few others but she never revealed which ones.

Exactly. While I love artists who aren't afraid to pour it all out in their songs like Ayu, you've gotta respect someone who avoids that as well.

I agree that great songs and writing are more what music is about, but Namie is def. one of those exceptions to the rule since she can pull them all off (when she wants) . And even if she's not like Ayu and Hikki, she's still in a league all her own, and you've gotta respect that.

For Namie you have to go beyond What A Feeling and New Look (actually there has only been one new look performance where not even half the song is performed...), though those aren't bad at all. Namie has been singing and dancing impressively at the same time since 1993.

Def., she was born to be a star. She really killed them Dancing Junk performances. <3 But oh, excuse me for cluttering up the thread with this discussion (though it's not as if I was the one who started it, I just had to jump in! ).
