The melody for "Heartplace"

How do I even begin to word my thoughts? lol

In my opinion, "Heartplace" is such a beautiful and powerful song. It is truly one of Ayu's best songs! I like to call it a masterpiece myself. The lyrics are so pure, the arrangement is quite captivating, and the melody is beautiful. ...is it not? But wait a minute, how does it go?

When I first heard "Heartplace" and became familiar with it, I sang the song in a particular way. The notes I sang were the melody, or so I thought.

When I saw a live performance of this song, Ayu was singing a completely different melody. But then I thought, "Maybe I was just singing the harmony without realizing it?"

Like I said in the beginning of my post, I'm not even sure how to word my question here! Maybe it'd be easier if I recorded some audio, but, sadly, I have no equipment at the moment.

Anyone know what the real melody is? How do YOU sing the song? (What exactly am I trying to ask? ) Maybe I should just leave my post as it is for now and come back if and when there are replies...

I guess you mean you just remembered the melody wrong? That happens to me sometimes. I know the melody to Heartplace (from singing along so much) and could hum it for you right now. =P

Did u mean u follow the melody of the song instead of follow how Ayu sing Heartplace in her way?

Heartplace is CREA, and for me, CREA always having unique tune or mellody..

And Heartplace is one of the following example, the way Ayu sing this song is just great, and unexpected, but it is my own opinion..

That song is crazy with harmonies, especially the chorus. Haa.

We are free to go anywhereeee
we want...

We are free... to dooo anything we want.
to dooo anything we want.

Ittai boku wa nani toitsumade tatakaun darou.
Ittai boku wa nani toitsumade tatakaun darou.

I think for the "boku wa nani toitsumade" the melody is the higher part. boKU WA NANI TOITSUMADE
Same with the rest of the chorus.

I can tell there IS a lower part for all the bottom lines of the lyrics.

Oh, sorry if I got the lyrics wrong too.

I hope you get what I mean. XD

I get what you guys mean. And I tried to make as much sense as possible.

I think I really learned the harmony for "Heartplace" thinking it was the melody.

Sometimes I wonder if what Ayu sings live is really the harmony, but I guess it's the melody. It's just that the lower part in the chorus (in the studio version) sounds more clear than what Ayu sings live. Either I just have a really good (or weird) ear (lol), or the balance between the harmony and melody is just so perfect. Maybe the harmony (the lower part, I'm assuming) is turned up more than what Ayu sings live so that it doesn't sound as awkward? I don't know, I just know that what Ayu sings live... I've never heard it before in the studio version. When she sang it that high I was like, "Wha...?"

Yeah I completely understand.
In the album version, the harmony is turned up in the chorus..
Like, in the live at PCDL.. I was shocked!!!
I forgot about it.. and when she sang it low in the chorus.. I thought.. did I think it was a different melody the whole time?
But what he hear in the album is her back up vocals. I think it's her still singing the backing vocals in Heartplace..
But in lives, she sings the lower part.

^ I see what you mean...

I really do wonder if the harmony was turned up in the studio version on purpose. To, like I said before, make it sound less awkward, for lack of a better word. Hey, sometimes the harmony can be the melody.

...wrong choice of words there, but I think some of you musicians might get what I mean. Maybe.

Well, thanks everyone for your contributions and input to this thread! I'm not saying this case is closed, but just thanking everyone!

I know what you're saying. The chorus has 2 melodies present, as most of ayu's choruses do. But Heartplace is the only one that has both parts almost equally prominent. Listen to the recording and you'll hear the harmony.

You're probably singing the lower part. The lower part is slightly more prominent in the recording. The lower part is "We are free... We want, *we are free to* do anything we want. *ittai bo*kuwa nanito itsumade *tataka*undarou". Parts in asteriks are in unison. "We are free... We want" represents where the lines 'call' and 'answer' each other. in parts that are in harmony, the lower part has the lower notes.

The upper is "...To go anywhere..., *We are free to* do anything we want. *ittai bo*kuwa nanito itsumade *tataka*undarou". As in the lower part where the harmony has the lower pitch, in the upper part, the melody is in the higher note. This is probably the part Ayu was singing in the live performance.

Do you understand what I'm saying? I'm a very musical person, so Its hard for me to explain this kind of stuff without using musical terms and writing out the notes. If you can read notes, plz tell me, and I'll write them out so you can play it and hear what I'm talking about.

I also can't sing it for you. I don't think I can... maybe ... * long silence* ... did you hear it?... lol. If at any point this explanation became incomprehensible, I'm sorry. When I get into this kind of stuff, I'll just type away and ususally end up leaving out some piece of vital information.

I know what you mean

for all ayu songs, she does the vocal for the melody and the harmony...(if you listen to the instrumental version you'll know what i mean)..sometimes during live she sings the harmony version instead of the melody (for some reason i dunno)....maybe she likes to play it up a bit and gives the fans something different?

In the PCDL live CD... she sounded horrid with Peco & Princess, but it's clear that she's singing the higher notes...
