Only ayu and ayumi have really been constantly reinventing themselves, I wouldn't even place them in the same category as the other. BOth have done so with great success.

I voted for namie as well, I think commercially, market size taken into account, her transformation has been most successful commercially, maybe along with christinas. I don't think brits transformation was equally commercially successful, but then again she was so huge to begin with.

^ Well, there are a good bit of people here under sixteen, right? And so many are not from the U.S. So it's not too much of a surprise..... I mean, I'm almost too young to know who she is, hah! I'm eighteen, and I don't think I would have heard much about her past career if not for having a general interest in music. (That, and my aunt loved her, so I grew up with an understanding of who this Madonna was.) Sadly, a lot of younger people these days are only going to know Madonna as a creepy, washed up looking muscle-woman from many, many years ago, hah... :\

In my opinion, this topic is kind of pointless since I'm sure everyone will say that Ayumi Hamasaki is the best at re-inventing herself... but honestly if it weren't for Madonna... I don't see ayu really reinventing herself nearly as much. After all Madonna has a big influence in Ayu's career both musically and stylistically.

I'm going with Ayu firstly, she changes her style all the time and it's always well received, at least in Japan.

I don't know these Western artists too well, or really listen to any of them, but I'll also say Madonna simply for the fact that she's still active and popular after all these years.

Ayu, Xtina, and above all, Madonna.

I don't really get why many of those are there. Britney? SRSLY? Adding elements of electro doesn't make a reinvention; besides that there isn't much different from her latest to her debut.

Christina DEFINITELY. All of her albums are completely different. Started out typical teen bubble gum pop, switched over to overtly sexual pop rock and R&B, then changed it up to a mature blues-y, classy jazz sound. In just 3 albums.

Madonna invented re-inventing yourself.

^ THIS! - minus Ayu ... sorry but thats my opinon

she used to be very re-inventing but in the last couple of years
i haven.t see that much progression.

With R'n'RC i think she.s on the right way to become the ARTIST Ayumi Hamasaki again.

Koda Kumi
Michael Jackson
Madonna
Namie Amuro

I personally think Ayu doesn't reinvent herself that much. She mostly does things she has done before and that makes her boring sometimes. I'm sorry, I love her but I just had to say what I think personally. :p

i think ayu only reinvented her looks and videos...cause her music and songs are practically the same thing...i mean after memorial address her style is always the same.
madonna is the perfect reinvented singer...but after the "american life" era her new reinventions are just recycled of popular music styles.

The only artists I know well enough to comment on this are Ayumi, Namie and Kumi.

Ayu definitely does, she reinvents her style and her music constantly. Others may not think so but I think those people aren't actually listening.

Namie as far as I know only reinvented herself once. Since then it's been a lot of the same but don't get me wrong, it's gets better and better in my opinion. It's like she took something and stuck with it and keeps improving on it.

Kumi... I'm still waiting for her to reinvent herself lol.

Out of that list, I think the only "reinventions" I liked were Ayu's Namie's and Kylie's. Oh yeah, and Alicia Key's.

I used to LOVE Britney before she totally changed her style and that goes for Madonna and Christina too. I haven't noticed much change in Beyonce's style (but that's probably cuz I don't listen to her much)

As for Kuu and Michael Jackson, I liked them before, and I like them now

I almost don't even know if I would consider Ayu as reinventing herself. Sure, her albums usually have a different theme to them, but I wouldn't exactly consider any of them an overall reinvention.

I'm not a huge Madonna fan by any means- but she truly is the living definition of reinvention (or atleast was in the 80s and 90s).

Kylie went from being the girl next door, to indy artist, to gay icon. Never a huge reinvention- she she has been able to change over the years to stay relevent.

With Britney, Koda, Namie- I would say they have had a very fluid change in image/music over the years. Never a reinvention.

Christina would be in the same group as Ayumi IMO- she has changed it up with each album, but its never been a reinvention exactly.

Hmm, I think Ayu & Namie. I don't listen or pay attention to Madonna, so I don't really know, but I hear she reinvents herself a lot too. Ayu is my favorite though, she does it so well.

You're welcome I guess? But I think you're talking to the wrong person... I don't even know you and that certainly isn't my age.
