Ayumi's Lyrics
Do you think Ayu's Lyrics are as good as it used to be ? Like she doesn't have the same spice and essence as before?

Certain songs repeat the same ideas as the last ones. Yes. But i think certain ones do indeed spark new ideas. =D

Well I feel her Lyrics are good. But I think the Dark songs are the ones that is improving most and the Relationship songs aren't as good.

I kind of agree with you, Akurei. Overall, I wasn't blown away by the "MY STORY" lyrics like I was with past albums. I am..., RAINBOW, and Memorial address really had the key Ayu lyrics, I feel. Her upbeat songs are getting a little cheesey (in Ayu-standards, not compared to other pop music), for example "Replace." Even "STEP you" let me down. Her upbeat, dance songs used to hold so much more to them. But that's understandable, nearly 8 albums into her career. Still, I hope the new album picks up the lyrical lows of her recent music.

some of her songs aren't as good as before..... she needs to really bring out her deeper emotions.... i feel like she's hiding things, and putting fake things on our plates.... You look at something like "No Way To Say", then you look at "GAME"... both go over the hardships of break-ups.... but "No Way To Say" REALLY brings out the inner emotion of the song, while "GAME" is just a more upbeat song, that doesn't show much emotion.... It's really been a while since she really put out a presentable ballad single... CAROLS wasn't all that great until the Classical Version came out...

I only listen to old Hamasaki, mostly "LOVEppears." =o her life is going good I supose so she dosent feel the need to write such sad things. She probably resolved her problems from before.
And I didnt really like the lyrics to any of the songs on "My Story," "game," and maybe "about you," where okay, but it didnt feel like Hamasaki to me. I could see her style change though in "Memorial Address", "Because of you," seemed more direct and diffrent...before Hamasaki seemed to almost speak to "you," as in herself, now "you" has a definate face and it isnt her own, or her speaking to her audience. |

I'm with Jimmy on this one, 005; I think "GAME" is one of the better songs on MY STORY. It's active, where as "No way to say" is much more passive I feel. "GAME" isn't upbeat at all in the lyrics, if anything they're pained, faked strength. The last stanza I really like, because she goes all out there and exposes her vulnerability, saying how much she really let this person take control of her and how weak they made her.

It's ironic ya know. She said she tried to be MUCH more honest in this album MY STORY but alot of you guys are saying she's hiding more and putting up fronts. x] And even stranger cuz she said she was satisfied with how it turned out since she reached into the deeper sides of herself to do this album (like the song Liar).
I am hoping I quoted it correctly from on of the translations i saw somewhere on a magazine...

I agree I Think she needs to put more emotion in the lyrics, Like we can really believe she has been though those things. Maybe she has writers block , Running out of things to write about.

Seems like she's been rehashing most of her lyrics/ideas lately although I can't imagine it being easy to have completely original songs when you have (60+?) songs. Still, it's forced and getting stale really and whens he sings, having 90% of the song sung with the same two backup singers is just bleh, she sings very little on her own anymore.

i seem like a bad guy..... haha that's cool, first time i riled up a crowd!
anyaways, GAME i say, is great in it's own way.... but i don't think it can compare to other break-up songs unless you, like Ayu, need the strength to move on.... I think though (she's still my fave) that she kinda fell after adding english.... english kinda blew her prestige, because she was one of the few to not put english until RAINBOW.... One reason why i liked her was because she never put english in her lyrics... i think though, that she needs a more.... deep sounding background music, because Honey and Replace were kinda sugary in my opinion.... |

It is weird how she was always almost adamant about using strictly Japanese in her lyrics for so long. And then suddenly she started dabbling with it. I mean, I guess it's okay to dabble in anything, it's just kinda interesting. She is much more influenced by what's cool in Japan nowadays, as opposed to defining what's cool. English lyrics, poppier cute music... I guess you could look at it 2 ways: (1) she [or Avex] is treading carefully by becoming something closer to other artists so as to maintain Ayu's popularity in her later years; or (2) she really is just getting exhausted from so many years of pumping stuff out, that she's having a bit of a creativity lapse. I think it might be the latter. It's noticeable even CREA's compositions; they were very very simple on "MY STORY" whereas in the past CREA was behind much more complex melodies. Ayu's the best, IMO, but maybe that very sake she should take a bit of a rest. It seemed to to Amuro Namie some good; her already great career exploded after she went away for a while, didn't it?

Her lyrics are as honest and as good as they always have been in my opinion. About You showed a lot of consistence in my opinion. winding road has awesome lyrics, they actually give me goosebumps and they almost sound like ayu is trying to show to her fans and even to the people who lost faith in her on how is she's been feeling about her career over the years, I can't see how that is not hamasaki at all, because it clearly sounds like her. Some of her past lyrics were simpler and had english words mixed as well so I don't see why put the blame on her newest stuff only (AUDIENCE and monochrome are examples of that), so she hasn't always been that rigid about using english in her lyrics at all.
Also I find it mediocre and unfair to compare 5 albums + 1 mini album worth of lyrics against the lyrics of MY STORY alone.

Ah! Perhaps, but Ifind that her songs are still great and to the standard, although I don't really understand the lyrics sometimes. Still, I admit that the older albums do have much nicer lyrics that moves the heart. Let us see what Ayumi comes up with next to judge her.
