Are compilation CDs as big as in the US?

It seems like there is always a new best-of CD popping up. Like best of the 80's, 80's love songs, 80's dance hits, etc (I just thought of the 80's first...) Then there are the Now! CDs, Grammy nomminees CDs, and too many more to remember.
Are they as big a thing in Japan? Maybe I just don't notice them, because I don't look for them.

I started thinking of this because I was going to make cd for my bf for his b-day with love songs. I was originally going to ask what y'all thought were the most romantic contemporary J-pop songs, but I think that has been asked before (but then again what hasn't ) and I started to wonder what people in Japan would say and then I started thinking of best-of cds...
