I think using the avex Japanese prices (1050/1890) would be more accurate than using US$. From that, avex would have to subtract the cost of 2 PVs, production of the single (cost of recording, mixing, distributing, making the CD, composers, covers etc.), promotion of the single and giving some to the stores - which I think in the end profit ~US$500k or less.

The cost to make a CD is just a few cents, the covers are relatively simple in their design and photography, decisions PV i doubt cost much, recording.. probably didn't cost much either.. still.. I think it'd be a little more than US$500k maybe not a lot more..
but then you need to go and figure in all the legal downloads from ringtones, and from single downloads, which I hadn't done..
but still, making 500K isn't that bad at all
