Sales = Popularity? I think that link is not as strong as you think. And what about her sales outside of Japan, which everyone seems to sweep under the rug? Digital sales? I think Ayu is going to be prominent in those TV shows right until when she deicdes to call it quits. She's still huge around the world, and that has a lot of pull. And the quality of her releases has not gone down, in fact, this year's 3 songs make up one of her best years in terms of song quality. What exactly can she do? Really the only thing that she can do is totally change her sound, but she's pretty much covered all areas of pop. |

But, yeah, I'm not disagreeing about Diva Ayu distancing herself from the public. To me it seems she was pulling herself back a bit more around 2004 and definitely 2005. It's just really evident now. Either way, I still think her sales are quite good for a female artist that is now 30 years old and has been around for a decade. I don't really think it's something to get all worked up about. Every year, there are people saying things about Ayu's falling status and how she is gonna retire, but she is still here and still going. There's like 2 or 3 pages in this sales thread about the fall of Ayu and it kinda gets old... When Ayu is like struggling to hit 50,000, then I think it's time to get antsy, but over 100,000 is still quite good.

And no, she is not a huge digital seller. And I'm also not sure where you are getting the information that she is "huge around the world." Well known in a few asian countries, but certainly not the world - neither of which has anything to do with her status inside of Japan anyways... And of course she can still take part in the end of year shows until she becomes completely obsolete, but what is at issue here is the closing spot and whether or not she should continue to get it or whether she should have even been getting it this year. But if she wouldn't make those songs for dramas I doubt that they were that catchy lyrically, and musically to the audience since her drama tie-ined songs always win huge-ly every other song she makes. FoL and PoL are the huge highlights on her recent album and outshine the other songs there by miles, can you say her album would do the same or even close to it without those two? Really? without FoL and PoL? It's also stupid to think that most of the people/music purchasers buy all ayu's singles just because of covers/different versions and not for the music so the different versions is not a thing that ayu can mainly rely on too. I don't like this ayu vs. hikki talking but as I'm sick of it that ayu's putting into laugh while her situation isn't bad, and it's not nice to put her into laugh specially when her situation is great (well not exrtemely hugely) but still great. I wonder if the index is bigger and it passed 125,000 first week! Last edited by ayumisrael; 22nd December 2008 at 11:58 AM. |

@Tony G & Sunshine: I actually agree with Sunshine for this round. If you follow around The recochoku site, you should notice that ayu is not a strong digital seller. Unless she has a general appealing song (in this case, Days), usually you don't see her on top 3 very often (e.g., GREEN, plus the others).
And even if she's popular over the world (which sadly she isn't), it doesn't really affect her popularity and statue in Japan. It's just like... do the US general public really care if Britney is popular in Europe? Will her success in Europe hugely affect her popularity in her own country?? @ayumisrael: Of course without a strong tie in, a single will not be selling as good as it is (and this applies to every artist). However, I would love to point out that even hikki sucks at physical sales (at least during BML, Passion, etc), her digital sales are one of the strongest in Japan. Take BML as an exmaple. The physical sales were very bad, but the digital sales were very strong. Also, not all her songs are written for the tie in. Take Prisoner Of Love as an example. It wasn't announced as the op of LAST FRIENDS until a few days before the album was released. And through her blog, hikki never mentioned that as a theme song. It's just the producers of the drama chose it in the end. Eternally is another example. The song was in Distance and now they use it as the OP of Innocent Love. You can say POL outshines the others (which I dun think so), but you can't say it's made for the drama, because it never was. No, I'm not backing up for hikki. And I believe no one is dissing or laughing at ayu AT ALL. Instead, most of us are point out some facts about ayu's current situation objectively. No one says her situation is very bad at all, as we're just comparing what she did before and she does now. You can't really say her situation is GREAT rite now unless you wipe out all her past.

Even tough I agree with most of what blugie said (once again XD), Hikki and Ayu really do different kinds of music most of the time, and Hikki's music sounds way more poppy plus her lyrics are probably easier to relate to atm (not for me tough), as Ayu has been writing songs like t2m and MW which aren't really things everyone likes to hear as they question the way of life that most of people live. And she did wear diva-like dresses before, it's just that she was younger and didn't really start looking like one until 2004. In the end XD all this talk isn't really leading us anywhere as this happens with each new release :p

btw, I don't want to come off as sounding TOO negative here, it's just that I actually really like this single and it should have been able to do better than this. It should have at least been able to outsell MW.
![]() I have to definitely disagree there. Of the two Ayu is definitely the most poppy, even if it is a rock song, it still has a pop base with an easy to follow structure. Part of the reason why I haven't been liking Hikki too much these last few years is because her songs got too experimental, less traditional pop, and overall less pleasing to the ears with only a few exceptions such as Flavor of Life. I wonder why is it always Hikki and Ayumi here??? It is like a regular pattern now.... Hikki was great, Ayu was great. Hikki is sux now and so is Ayu now. Considering what they achieved in their past years, they both doing unbelievably bad...bad...bad...
And I believe tie-ins only work only when the dramas/ movies/games, whatever they were, are well accepted. And sometimes, it works vice versa. U can see urself how many people, at least here, are becoming more interested to watch DB Evolution just because of Ayu's tie-in? U may arguing but puh-leaseeeee, stop comparing....

Namie's 60's, 70s, 80s, only sold 114,000 in the first week this year. Utada's Heart Station did not sell all that well... I cannot remember the figure, but I remember she did not get number 1. I mean the single, not album, and Prisoner of Love only sold 81,000 physical copies, but is one of the most downloaded songs. Even KAT-TUN could only sell 250,000 physical copies of white xmas, maybe 100,000 less than usually. Kobukuro Toki no ashiato only sold 214,000, only 20,000 more than Mirrorcle World, and they are much more popular than Ayumi Hamasaki. It's the different world that we are living in right now.. people cannot afford those expensive singles one after another I think.. so they can only choose one person's single. So it's really error to compare popularity with sales, because if you look at these sales and standing, she is still VERY popular. Mirrorcle World is number 33, after all the Mr. Children, EXILE, GReeeeN, Aoyama Thelma, and Johnny's groups, and she is third best selling female artist in singles & album this year~ if you think about it, she sold around 1,300,000 albums this year, if you combine GUILTY and A Complete, so I dont think you have to worry. She is not number one, but she is still one of the best. And about the pop thing.. I believe Utada is much more pop and r&b, which is much more popular than pop & rock. Utada was based upon r&b sounds before, and still now, and that's what makes her more access to others. But yeah, I would say, it is much much more pop than Hamasaki. A lot of people say they dont like Mirrorcle World or Talkin' 2 Myself because it is rock, and harsh~ so.. yeah, I think for sure utada is more pop and mainstream with her r&b root. Utada doesnt go in shows often, she doesnt have fanclub, and she releases albums sometimes 2 years in a time, and goes without releasing single for 1 year but she can still sell more than Hamasaki, because of her personality, and her music. I think maybe if GREEN wasnt in this release, but another kind of ballad, that was more relatable, then it would sell much more. Even we like GREEN, it is not a popular type of song right now. In these years, even after divorce, Utada still has her "sorrow." Like, she always seems sad. I think it is a bit attractive to Japanese~ While, Hamasaki has become an entirely new person from who she was before... But if you noticed, the male performers in japan have much easier time.. people could forgive a lot of things from the males that they cannot forgive in the females. ahaha. |

I would be upset if it didn't. t2m was experimental while this is in the ballad sector. And we all know Japanese love ballads, especially in winter.
