Raspberry dream "era"?
Cuz we all know that happened before ASfXX, and we ALL know how different her ASfXX voice sounds from that of her raspberry dream voice.

I just watched the raspberry dream cover video, and I'm weeping.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN JUST WASNT.
CRASHED BURNED DIED.

I also really like snowy kiss now.
Really nice overall.

But I believe I am... is the album where she started losing it and find a vocal personality of her own... Her first 3 albums are pretty much straigh-foward Keiko

@Delicious n Bold

It get pretty obvious here.
Also, Ayumi herself is a declared huge Keiko fan.

Her singing also has some shades of Seiko Matsuda, Matsutoya Yumi and some Akina Nakamori that I could notice...

even so, it couldn't save the ear-grating ASfXX.

Why she ditched her raspberry dream voice and brought in that crap ASfXX voice, i don't know.

Its like her voice went UP in pitch. HAO is that even possible? ugh.

Ayu's natural tone is very... generic. She sounds pretty much like any other japanese female singer during her pre-Avex days.

The voice she used during her peak reflected not only a revival of the 80's idol concept, with the kawaii image and high pitchness (remembering the biggest female singers from the 90s are most likelly Keiko, Namie and Yuming, none of them sounding this way), and also making reference to some of the jpop most iconic voices (Seiko, Keiko, Yuming, Akina that I can recognize, but there's more). So, the extreme high pitchness make her voice unique and easily recognizible, and at the same time, it took advantage of the emotional memory japanese people have of some of their most beloved vocalists for the past 20 years at that time.

The high pitch in intself is Seiko all the way... She was the one who actually popularizared the kawaii image for idols, wasn't she? The influence gets clearer on some songs, being Thank U the biggest example. The is singing the words just like Seiko would on her biggest hits.

^ So one could probably sum that up as
"Ayu's popularity grew because she made people nostalgic. She herself reminded people of others, so they latched onto her in order to remember the past"

that, and dem lyrics.
I have no emotional attachment to shrills and shrieks of death.

AND not even The Vibrato of Doom™
Here I go, judging...

Well, to be fair, this is not an "Ayu thing"... It's very common for pop singers to both inspire themselves on past vocalists and add some technical imperfections to their voices as a way to make it recognizible and unique. I don't know enough jpop to get deeper on that, but taking western music as an example, Britney's singing started as a mix a way to explot her virgin/***** image and 80's Madonna, 80's Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson with hints of Whitney on the ballads. She was a far more competent vocalist before, but her voice wasn't either recognizible or iconic on it's own.

^But we can still say that she reminded people of other singers from the past, so they latched onto her like hungry slugs.
Her early album sales prove it.
It's definitely not an ayu thing, but that's what I got out of reading one of your posts

I didn't say she got big because she reminded people of singers from the past, I said it played a role on her voice becoming iconic. But this is very, very natural... People tend to like what they already know and recognize, and popstars are always build having past popstars as a base.

There's this very interesting Beyoncé video, I believe she was introducing Tina during the Grammy's, where she cites her biggest influences as a performer and singer, and once you think about it, you can really see she took a lot from those people.

It would be very bizarre if you got into Ayumi because she reminded you of popstars you didn't know as they weren't part of your cultural reference...
