Glad to see how well she's doing. I was going to ask if Oricon includes digital numbers as well, but then realized the album isn't even out digitally yet.

I will be surprised if she released a studio album before she retire . If not , then Finally will officially be Namie's last release

I'll just quote oaristos cause he already answered this:

Please, don't understand that as a way of diminishing Namie's achievement. She deserves all the success and sales in the world, but what we're trying to say is that it's sad these extraordinary sales only happen under extraordinary circumstances. Namie deserves to sell one million copies always.
Yeah, we ARE happy she is selling well and that IS a big achievement. We're just sad over how people don't usually care about artists (no matter if they're doing well or not) until they die or retire or somehting like that. For example MJ who was a constant joke in his last years but after he died people realised how great of an artist he was.

It's like a song by a Brazilian singer that says "don't wait for me to be gone / to realize how much you love me". The point is "we should love our artists, whether they're active and alive and well or not", the point IS NOT "she had to retire to get great numbers".

I really can't believe you guys are thinking Corvina is coming for namie's wig, seriously.

Namie herself is fantastic, and she has really good and smart management / marketing team as well. The fact that the digital versions are not available may have a correlation with extraordinary high physical sales. ( now compare this strategy with Made in Japan, which was availble for streaming a month before physical release lol)

Haha, thank you, gustavopc (and also oaristos btw).
Imo what I wanted to say was pretty clear.
I mean, really, I wasn't diminishing anybody, on the contrary. If all , I'm mad about people buying Namie's last album now in masses, but what about before? The numbers clearly show, she was damn popular before, so why are people just buying now? (exaggerating now of course, to make the point, don't take my words literally!)
Gonna repeat myself, it says a lot about the state of the market and to me, looking at all of the statistics and numbers of physical and digital sales, it still is kind of a bummer, where all the selling power went in the last ten years.

Exactly, what I hate the most is that they always have to compare artists to other artists in a negative way, “oh this one doesn’t count because she doesn’t write her own lyrics” “oh so and so are doing much better in sales than hers” “oh this one is just a product with no passion for her music” it’s always something.

I understand that but I’m seeing a lot of comments saying it in a negative way, that she’s only getting close to a million just because she’s retiring and that she doesn’t get higher sales when it’s a normal release.

I don’t think anyone was going after them.

I really think everybody understood what Corvina said, it's just that not everyone agreed with her opinion. My only problem with the original post is when she said that "selling a lot only on special occasions is a sad thing" (for the industry or the artist, whatever).

Imo, it isn't sad or bad. I think it's normal and that's the way the industry is right now.

I don't think the industry was better in the past just because of those huge numbers of sales. The industry is much better now, if not for the labels but for the fans. Music is much more democratic and easier to approach.

In a world where I can buy only the songs I like (or even download illegally) why would we still have a need for huge sales? Why does it matter?

Utada herself said she doesn't care if her fans reach her music ilegally, as long as they listen to what she created. I think that's how as an artist you'd feel. Of course people need to support you, but being in touch with your art isn't just as important?

Hm, the thing is with the Japanese market, that it more looks like stuff is harder to get than before. Not more approachable. Which is one reason why I feel it's sad.
There's more, but this is probably not the right place to discuss after all.

Again, this is JUST NOT TRUE. Yeah, he was a public joke because well he did a looot of crazy things, but he was still known by the title King of Pop and everyone who did music gave him credit. You are simplifying a lot here...just like some others.

edit: Corvina, I thought you started listening to J-Pop way before I started. Stuff was so hard to get, new artist so hard to find in 2005. It became soo much easier and there is not a single song regardless of how old or new, I can´t find. Again, I think it is weird how you see things and I do think you putting much too much nostalgia into it, but if you feel like that, its okay. Its not a personal attack, I just disagree. The market has become much better and the quality of the music too.

I myself don't think Corvina was trying to put down Namie either cos I know that's not her character

When English is not your 1st language , sometimes what you write online , others might misunderstood that what you wanted to say ain't negative but based on what you wrote , others might perceive it otherwise

Years ago back when ayaka announced her sudden departure from the music business due to health problems (as at that time there was no telling if she would be back or not) , ayaka's History 2006 - 2009 also sold a lot so it's not just Namie

And yeah so what Namie doesn't write & compose her own music ? She made up these 2 aspects with other things , like being business savy

I do think that if Namie wasn't a singer , she would do well in marketing as the way she has marketed/promoted her releases over the last few years has worked really well in her favour

And I also feel that for those who casually supports/listens to Namie & never buy bother any of her releases until Finally (and now ALARM) , you have the last 25 years to discover her music & now with this , isn't it a bit ironic ?

Just speaking for myself, I didn't get it like that. I just disagreed with the overall feeling, as I said. She never attacked Namie and I don't think why people read it like that.

I'm sure she has a marketing team that does all that stuff for her. She probably has a say in what she wants and doesn't want to do, but most of the promotion and marketing is done by her team. I always laugh when I see those Facebook updates because it is obvious she is not the one who writes them
