Well, Ayu's still the top solo female artist in single and album sales, so that's good even if the numbers are lower than they used to be.

mp3s were never that popular in Japan because a high speed connection still costs a lot of money. The biggest portion of music piracy comes from people renting audio CDs from the stores and copying it to their MD player.

I think a big issue is the aging japanese population. (In the news, Japan invented a robot that can put out fires, detect water and gas leaks, and relays information to security personnel. Their reason for this? There are not enough young people to be security guards http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/news...APAN-ROBOT.XML ) By 2040, 1/3 of all Japanese people will be elderly. Ayu has been out for 7 years. Her fans in the beginning are probably much older now and don't listen to her as much. I think thats one factor in a shrinking japanese market, and especially for the J-idol. Mika Nakashima is very popular, but look at her sales of "MUSIC"

BoA sold a lot more because it is a best album, and best albums sell unusually well in Japan.

You can't say that yet you have to wait till the end of the year and then we will see the female with the most sales

As of right now Ayu really doesn't have any huge competition in the form of solo females, unless possibly Utada Hikaru popped onto the scene with something new (which I doubt). Ai Otsuka could possibly pull another 'Sakuranbo' but I don't see it happening. So for now my bets are on Ayu for being the best selling solo female of the year.

However I'd like to see Onitsuka Chihiro release something and land herself back onto the charts. I miss her ;_; also I hope artist like Rie fu and YUI start to get better sales and of course Hirahara Ayaka as well.

Hmm but still these sales are pretty sad... btw does anyone know how these compare to sales in the UK?

Well, not very impressive for Ayu, but I'm not surprised by these results, because "MY STORY" and "STEP you/is this LOVE?" got all they deserve, not more, not less...

I meant that in the time period this chart deals with, Ayu does have the biggest sales. Perhaps someone in the second half of the year will beat her for best sales of the whole year put together, but on this chart Ayu is still the #1 woman.

I think they are pretty good overall. She is the top selling female artist and to see really big hitters like B'z, Dreams Come True, and Kinki Kids' albums not selling anywhere near where they used to is kind of shocking. I was also under the assumption that Mika's MUSIC album had done much better than that.

And I just don't get the appeal of Orange Range. I don't think they are anywhere near that good to justify those sales, which makes me think they are the current fad in Japan and thus their numbers will not sustain in the future.(hopefully.)
