well, I can tell you this. The promotion was HUGE! There were stand in Japan that ONLY sold the A best CD =) Anyway, both A Best and Distance managed to get the number 1 oricon position. I think A Best had the first few weeks though

Distance outsold A Best in the end. The margin wasn't much.

Approximately 200 000 copies different in the end.

My thread at U-O on all the sales. New sales are inaccurate because of the Oricon letdown a month back.

My opinion is that the sales were dissapointing to Ayu fans. Hikki's sophomore album outsold Ayu's CD that Avex planned to end Ayu's career with. Ayu's best lost against Hikki's second try. But Hikki deserves it too for being so amazing.

If Avex wanted A BEST to sell better, they could've taken a time out Like Utada did. She doesn't release much.. But like a few days after the release of A BEST, there were plans everywhere announced that there would be new singles, new remixes and new cds. So it's kinda logical.

Infos.:

- BIG promotion. Ayu was HUGE, so AVEX decided it was the right time to achieve enormous sales with a best album (usually the best-selling album for the artists).

- The release date was changed to compete with Hikki new album. Lots of atention from the media because of that. But, Ayu promotion was 10 times bigger than what Toshiba-EMI did for Hikki.

- At the first week, Distance sold 3 million copies on the first week, while A Best sold 2,87 million copies. Distance was #1 in the first week, A Best #1 in the second week.

- At the end, DISTANCE sold 4.46 million copies being the 4th best-selling album in Japanese history. A BEST sold 4,28 million being the 6th best-selling album in Japanese history and the best-selling Avex album ever.

- All the tracks were fan favorites, most of them were released as singles but some them weren't (A Song for XX, Who). Songs from her first album were recorded again to show how Ayu voice was better. M wasn't in any of her albums.

That's what I know.

^it probably is. none of the newer artists have ever sold close to ayu's amount. i think the closest out of the newer artists is probably like kumi's Best~first things~ or EXILE's PERFECT BEST.

Ya, & even those couldn't beat some of Ayu's studio albums, like "Duty" & "I am...", so.
