Johnny’s Entertainment lifts artist photo ban on its official website

Johnny’s Entertainment (the agency for popular idol groups SMAP, TOKIO, Arashi, KAT-TUN, and NEWS, amongst many others) is famous for enforcing a strict “no photo” online policy for their artists. Even the official websites for dramas and movies typically lack cast photos for a Johnny’s actor.

Until recently, Johnny’s artists were either seen as cartoons or silhouettes; some were even missing altogether. However, on February 28th, the ban on photos from the agency’s official website, “Johnny’s net“, was finally lifted. Fans were surprised to see that profile pics and album covers from their artists were uploaded onto the website.

With the advent of internet technology preventing pictures from being easily copied, it seems that the company felt comfortable enough to loosen its stance. Drama and television sites are now also allowed limited usage of Johnny’s artist photos.

One reporter remarked, “Johnny’s artist photos are still banned on internet news sites, where security is lacking, but foreign sites outside of the agency’s power use face photos freely. Eventually, they will have to allow the use of these photos on Japanese news sites as well.”

A cameraman for an idol magazine also revealed, “Johnny’s Entertainment even prevents photos from being sent through e-mail. So when pictures taken for magazines need to be confirmed, they have to be delivered by bike. It was inefficient and expensive. Hopefully, with the lifting of the ban, Johnny’s Entertainment will improve their views of the Internet…”

Fans of Johnny’s artists have rejoiced, with some going as far as calling the change “a historical event.”

I mean, if you're a fan of - let's say - Arashi, you know how the guys look. If you're not, you will not care if there are pics beside their profiles or not.

And "historical event"...?! Let us try not to exaggerate the whole thing!


Personally I never understood why JE doesn't allow companies to post pictures of their idols!
I mean, there are people who buy albums/singles/DVDs only because the cover looks pretty. Isn't it stupid to hold back the pics and only show silhouettes?!

Here we go - it could be the dawn of a new era!

It's quite similar to the Open Skies between Japan and the United States, when historically airlines had to get government approval to fly between Japan and America as well as scheduling, but today, provided that slots are available, airlines can fly between these two destinations when and how they want...

Now what will happen? What about the covers that were previously posted as "classified" for Oricon and those online retailers? I hope they follow this suit...

i'm glad that picture policy was lifted. it makes the most sense to completely do without the whole thing, lol.

and i wouldn't really mind if kou & jun were together, but i don't trust that image, lol. you know how tabloids are.

I was perplexed too about this when I came on the fandom some 3 years ago

I mean , I don't see that happening to other artistes's (be it English or Japanese) so that's a 1st for me to handle in a rather amusing manner

I don't know what non monetary benefits Johnny can get by doing something like that , but at least he's not senile anymore :p

I love #4 and #5.
I like #1.
#3 is okay - the jacket is ugly though, but maybe it looks better when I see it on the Arashi-member, who picked it.

Arashi’s Sakurai Sho to star in new Aflac CM alongside a “blue duck”



Sakurai Sho, one of the famed members of the idol group Arashi, will be lending his star power to a good cause by appearing in a new line of CMs for Aflac alongside one of its new characters, “Aoi Duck” (“blue duck”). The new character is inspired by the image of a blue bird of happiness, and is sure to catch the attention of many alongside the famous actor and singer.

The new Aflac campaign will promote new products (insurance) and features of support and security for life after the treatment of cancer. The new products will be released on March 22nd, with the commercial airing starting on March 14th.

Sakurai hopes to create more awareness about the support mechanisms available to those undergoing treatments for cancer, and the blue duck aims at creating a certain kind of comfort in providing help to those who need it.

So now that we'll have Naive cm, we have news about Aflac life insurance for Sho.

櫻井翔、青い鳥は「嵐のメンバーです」
嵐の櫻井翔（２９）が９日、都内で開かれた生命保険会社「アフラック」の新ＣＭ発表会に出席した。　同社の 新たながん保険「生きるためのがん保険Ｄａｙｓ」のキャンペーンキャラクターに起用され、「責任重大です。 同世代にがんやがん保険が身近になるきっかけになれば」と真剣な口調で訴えた。

同社のＣＭキャラクターはアヒルの「アフラックダック」だが、１４日から放送される櫻井のＣＭでは童話の「 青い鳥」がモチーフの「青いダック」として登場する。

青い鳥」には「ふだん気付かないが、実は一番身近にいていざというときに頼りになる」という意味が込められ ており、「自分にとっての青い鳥は？」と聞かれ、「嵐のメンバーです」とテレていた。

A little summary about this, Sho had press con yesterday about this Aflack cm. This cm will promote a life insurance for those in Cancer treatment. Along with Sho-kun there will be a blue duck. The 15seconds version of the CM will be start airing on 14th march and the 30second one on 22th March. For Sho the blue bird means something like you don't really notice, but in reality it's the one you rely on the most on crucial moments. So when Sho was asked "who is your blue bird?" he answered "Arashi members", then he was asked "All the members?" and he said "Yup, that's what i think"
