But for them to be so monstrously successful for about 4 years now and still going strong by the looks of it.. They must be hitting all the sweet spots in providing entertainment for their fans.

The thing is: not a single one of these girls can hold a candle next to Ayu (as a solo artist)
They can't even be compared to Kana Nishino, who was the last solo female artist to be really popular in Japan

People acting like 4 years is that much time...

It's not like their sales will vanish from one day to another and the group still is relatively fresh, even more compared to any solo singer this forum users like to worship, but they most likely won't get decades of huge sales.

If we consider cultual impact it's hard to evaluate how much better they will stand against other music acts right now, considering a huge amount of their sales comes from a marketing gimmick and a good amount of their singles end up on the trash can.

you know how they say a trend comes and goes a style stays in fashion all the time. I think akb is just a comercially produced trend. japan is nuts for cute and young that's their trend for...welll more or less the whole life lol so really. If you would leave them on their own i don't think they would manage wuthout all the people making them into who they are. I just cannot take them seriously, plus they are like an army of girls while Ayu is ONE SINGLE SOLO ARTIST, hence why i cannot take this "record" seriously either. when i think of AKB, Ayu's Alterna video comes to my mind lol it's pretty much what it is.

Ayu is still "the best selling female artist in terms of total sales with over 50 millions records sold".
