Been listening to Jolin all day. So nostalgic for me...

Can't believe it's been so long since I went to China! I'm going to Korea next month, and I think my next trip will be to Taiwan.

"Jolin went to see Les Misérables (the musical) in London, she was shocked to see that one of the characters, Fantine, was played by a Korean actress: "It turns out that Asians can also stand on the international stage, sing and act for foreigners to listen!"

The day after she bought the original book by Victor Hugo. She also made an "Internet homework list" of musicals that includes The Phantom Of The Opera, The Drowned Man, The Book Of Mormon, War Horse and Billy Elliott.

Since musicals are inspiring her, it's been reported that Jolin's upcoming album will be opera* themed!"

wow..is this true? although the news it's from august 2013 it would be awesome !!! she really evolved a lot with her MUSE album and I think the next one will be even greater.

Yep but it was back then you know, I wouldn't be surprised if she changed her mind... Like for MUSE when we got info that she was supposed to collaborate with a Korean photographer & a foreign singer and she did not lol

By the way it's been revealed that Jolin will produce her upcoming album herself, she has been taking Music Production courses for more than 6 months. She wants to know her voice more and know how to mix it with instruments.
Release is still scheduled for this summer!

It's nice to see she really cares about her music~
Although I have my reservations about her producing her next album, I'll just have to wait and see how that goes

Hate how she takes 5ever to release new albums now. As much as I love her, I don't think her albums are really good enough to warrant 2-year breaks between considering they're over half stuffed with same-sound-y ballads every single time -__-

Actually she really started to work on it just a few months ago, so it's not surprising to me in the end that it won't be released this summer...

Since Jolin can choose what she wants to sing since Myself, she's taking it slow. And this time she's also producing the album. About MUSE for instance it got delayed so much because she couldn't find memorable demos or just demos that she liked. For this new one she already listened to hundreds of demos and is working everyday with foreign producers.

By the way her albums were never "over half-stuffed" with ballads, it's more like half-half. MUSE even had "only" 4 ballads if you don't consider Someone as a ballad.

Jolin likes dance songs more, but if she wants to sell in the Chinese market, she has to provide ballads because that's what lots of her fans want. Do you remember Myself's "flop" mostly because it only had 2 slow songs?
And when MUSE came out with its half-half combination it sold really really well, almost twice more than Myself in Taiwan only. I even read that it was considered as a (mini-)comeback for her.
On baidu I saw a lot of people as well saying that Color Photos was their favorite (!) from the album.
So even if you don't like her ballads and think they're bad and don't need much time to produce, you have to think about the fact that she has to provide ballads if she wants to stay in the game there.

^ Sometimes I'm wondering Chinese people's taste. I have heard so much bland sounding ballads and found out later that those songs are hugely popular. I can't claim it affects on every issue. Of course there's individuals and we all have different taste. Maybe lyrics itself have a deeper meaning which I can't understand because I'm a foreigner and don't own any kind of emotional bond to their motherland.

Jolin's best ballads are the ones with wishful/hopeful/haunting melody. And I'm big fan of any kind of stringed instruments. I agree that her latest album didn't include any ballad which will give goosebumps.

Most of her ballads are so incredibly forgettable. I can think of maybe 5 tops that I can tell apart from all the rest lol. And it's not just that they all sound so much alike, but the fact that they all feel so soulless and she just doesn't have the vocal chops for a ballad.

And Linoa62, I feel like you took my post a little too much to heart and too literally. I've been a big fan of Jolin for over 10 years; in fact, if you scroll back up this page, I posted just a couple posts back about how much I appreciated that she really cares about her music. I realize that forgettable, mundane, generic ballads are just part of the territory, Jolin's music being C-pop and all. I wasn't trying to make a serious jab at her, but I do stand by what I said: considering, for me, MUSE was by far her worst album and took the longest to produce, I don't think her work right now is justifying the length of time it's taking to get out.

WOW XD

Based on your answer it seems like I sounded like a stan >_<
I never thought that you were not a fan or something just because you don't like some songs, or that you were saying that she didn't care about her music o_O My post was not meant to make you feel "attacked" too! If so, I apologize.

I may have been straightforward because in your post it felt like you were actually stating your opinion as a fact: the part when you said that C-Pop/Jolin's ballads suck, are badly produced, all sound the same etc
It looked more like you were saying it was a fact, it didn't look like you were just stating your personal opinion.

Anyway I just wanted to say that whether we like them or not, if she didn't sing ballads fit for the Chinese market we wouldn't get any albums anymore and gave a couple of examples... Nothing else!

^ I didn't really feel personally attacked, so no problem!

I'm not really sure how you took my original post as stating my opinion as a fact, though. In fact, I'm not really sure how you read from that that I was explicitly saying all her ballads are bad. Literally all I said in the original post was that her albums tend to be half filled with ballads that all sound a lot alike. The post was worded as an opinion in any case: "I hate how... I don't think..."

I never made any allusions to the production quality of her ballads until after you replied to me.

Honestly, I'm really tired of the fact vs. opinion debate lol. I feel like there's a growing tendency on this forum to think that you should have to state "in my opinion" before every single opinion you write down which is just silly. Of course it's just my opinion and I don't think everyone should have to adhere to it, but I'm not going to say "in my opinion!" in every single post, just like I never say it when I'm criticizing or complimenting something in real life.

Especially because the only time you HAVE to say it's only your opinion is when you're saying something negative... If your opinion is positive, it's okay to state it as fact all you want... It happens all the time on these forums sighs.

Sorry, I think I'm going off on a tangent lol

Lol No I understand, I totally get what you mean...
I just took your post the wrong way, my bad >_<

Don't worry I noticed the "IMO" and everything in your post, it's just a -wrong- feeling I got.

Anyway now that I think about it my post was not only directed at you but also at people who criticize C-Pop ballads as well, it was my "rant of the day" I guess lol
To be honest I feel like J-Pop and K-Pop ballads (especially K-Pop ballads) are as "dull" if not way more than C-Pop ones. I don't understand all the "hate" only for C-Pop ballads. That's why I felt the need to react I think...

On another subject if you hated MUSE, I think there's high chances you won't like her upcoming album since Jolin supervised MUSE from beginning to end, and this time she's producing it XD

By the way if Warner doesn't like the new album they can turn it down...
So she has more freedom than ever but her hands are still tied a little.

Really? Wtf...I hate when artists are not allowed to show their true potential because of the music market....Jolin is a good example..I mean, she changed so many labels..

I really liked MUSE (the visuals are great) but this time I'm hoping for something more diverse, not only ballads and dance (the only kind of experimental song was Spying on you behind the fence which is one of my favourites from the album). I know she can do it, because she has potential. J-Game is a good example, with all those trumpets and stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if she had a change of heart since this article, so don't expect necessarily an opera-themed album...
