Koda Kumi's new album, TRICK. The fourteen songs included in this album have a “Tricky” or “Hocus-Pocus” theme to them, and just like magic, are constantly changing。Hip-Pop, Electro, Rock, R&B, Ballads, Pop..... [The album] contains wide range of colorful sounds and lyrics each with an individual story. An album in which each song is sung to show a different scenario or interpretation of the world. “A whole new Koda Kumi”!!　(<-- Totally not sure about the 'A whole new Kumi thing... It says Henka and I know that means like 'switch up' but there's no grammar so I don't understand.)

「'TRICK' was is an album made with the theme 'A search for great entertainment.' A key ideal in the creation of this album was the element of "Surprise"。With this new album, we really wanted to gather various types of music, and forge a persona in order to make a “Music Trick”; we wanted to create a "fresh surprise." With this album again we thought strongly about the creation of a tour. We thought not only about "How she would sing," but also "How she would show. [the album]." Actually it was really the first time that I had thought so much about the live performance of an album.」

This album is like a show in a dazzling, mystical world. Being able to create such variety and be so daring was because of a "Confidence" that was found, says Koda Kumi.

「Having TABOO become a hit, and collaborating with Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas……From such experiences, I have created an album where the core songs are not of a catchy 'sing-at-Karaoke' variety, but rather daring; and I had the confidence that people would want to listen to it. So I really got to take a step into a more spacious genre.

And these thoughts:

「In my last album, Kingdom, I made Pop-colored, strong, catchy songs with a soft center. And as I looked over them, I thought "This is really a Kuu-chan-esque album." Therefore, I decided I wanted to do something unexpected this time around.」

With that, this time, rather than a "cute" feeling, the album would more appropriately be called "cool." From the hard Hip-Hop opening, you blast off into "The Koda Kumi" world.

「Actually, after December 2009 it's going to be my ten year anniversary!!　Looking forward to that, I would really like to jump-start, or revamp Koda Kumi. I feel like this album will be the dawn of a new me. It's an album that I made with confidence and feel gets my point across」

It's been almost nine years since her debut. Koda Kumi, who has worked hard and established herself, will continue to evolve.

「I think from now on it's good that I evolve and reinvent myself. Therein, listen to this album, and think 'Ahh, she has this side to her,' but at the same time 'But won't she show us a new side with her next venture?' If I could get people to expect that, it would be a really big success.

It's quite electronic, and I had this image of driving in a futuristic city during the creation. This is another song where I say "I'll take you to a fun new world" and lead the listener, acting out the image of a cool woman. As far as for what kind of woman I imagined, it was Mine Fujiko in her black leather body suit, lol」

『ｓｈｏｗ　ｇｉｒｌ』
「The moment you listen to this song it really thrills you. It's concept is that of a twirling "Trick," which brought about its creation. This song expresses the theme of a bad girl taking a boy into the back-stage dressing room." I play the "Demonic cinderella who plays with her men." 「This was a song written and composed for me by a man named HIRO. I really prefer to sing my own lyrics to express myself, so it has been a while since I've sang a song written by someone else. I wanted to sing it because of the straight lyrics that ride so cleanly on the melody and really spoke to me, and because it was interesting to sing a song from a man's perspective. This song is about a woman saying how she wants her man to be, and creating him in her own way. I thus sang it as if I was wishing "I want to be loved like this!!" lol」

「This is a ballad about a lover from whom your heart has grown distant, and you're wishing you could return to the days of happiness. It gives me the image of a woman unable to forget her love and walking slowly through a gently illuminated town.」

「For me, this song was a "daring song I used to jump my personal hurdle." It was a catchy, less-poppy core sound, so I was slightly anxious before the release. But that changed into confidence after the release. The woman I envisioned in this song was L World's Jenny (I don't know what that is). Wanting to head to a new world, but being unable to. A woman who holds onto that feeling of being lost and moves forward.」

『Ｈｕｒｒｙ　Ｕp』
「A song similar to 'Ningyo Him' or 'Freaky,' where I made a Koda Kumi-style try at rock. But it's yet again a different kind of rock. As it is really a cool track, I'm quite satisfied with it. I imagined a woman at the mercy of (DAMENZU) ((I don't know if that's slang or what but I haven't seen it before. I'm guessing it has something to do with men) I'm blowing off the pain of my situation, but I won't cry myself to sleep. Agony and anger mix and the chaotic feelings become the screams in this song.」

『Ｔｈｉｓ　ｉｓ　ｎｏｔ　ａ　ｌｏｖｅ　ｓｏｎｇ』
「Love is not simply "happiness", but has various parts. Whatever god you pray to, it won't come true, however many times you sing love songs you don't reach the one you want... "Despair" is another part of love.That is the premis of this song. It's a type of song that I had not yet tackled, and it shows another side of me. So I listened to his stuff and he's was really cool, so I went for it. He really took this song to the "bling bling" level.」

「This is a collaboration song with Fergie of the Black Eyed pease. An international duet between two singers. But we haven't performed together yet... I want to someday stand on the same stage!!」
