WHO: International superstar Mariah Carey, the #1 most successful female recording artist of all time, with more than 160 million sales world­wide -- who recently earned her 18th #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Touch My Body," surpassing Elvis Presley's long-standing chart record of 17 #1's.

WHAT: A lighting ceremony at the Empire State Building, where Mariah will flip the light switch on a scale model of the Empire State Building. The Empire State Building will be lit in pink, lavender and white all weekend to celebrate the album color motif of Mariah's new album E=MC2, which enters at #1 on the Billboard chart this week with the biggest first week Soundscan total of her career, 463,000 units.

Mariah currently has 3 songs on the Hot 100. "Touch My Body" is still at #5, "Bye Bye" just debuted at #23, and "Migrate" is at #92.

Mariah sang on GMA this morning, and it had some interesting results. Her backing track messed up during the first verse of "Touch My Body", and she got really pissed. Then it started messing up again during the end and she started singing "Stop singing my part, baby" but she was totally professional about it. Her perfs of "I'm That Chick" and "Bye, Bye" were amazing though. Here's the link that has pictures and the 3 videos:

Video of the Empire State Building being lit up for MC. According to Mariah Daily, E=MC^2 should also take #1 this week. With 45.86% of the total counted, Mariah has 98,239. I can't do math, but that's 200k in the second week, right? Sorry Ashlee, lol.

Anyway, congrats to Mariah! This album is starting to grow on me, albeit a little slowly...I'm starting to enjoy more and more tracks, and I'm happily surprised at the debut of Bye Bye on the Hot 100

It's debatable. But Mariah is definitely the most successful in the United States.

the best selling female artist of the world is either Madonna or Celine Dion, most likely Madonna since Celine isn't as popular among younger people she once was.
but it's hard to determine since a lot of sources are biased and the sales info isn't always accurate.

Mariah is the most popular in the US, but she lost a lot of popularity especially in Europe on butterfly to charmbracelet, until she made a huge comeback with EOM. she didn't do that well in the US either with butterfly to charmbracelet, her career in the US was going downhill until EOM.

E=MC^2 is a hit already, but I don't think it'll match EOM in terms of success.

mostly because of E=MC^2 lacks the really strong single material EOM had, and they aren't really helping the situation with the single choices so far.

Tentative sales for this week are 175,899, with Mariah coming in at #1 again. Congrats, MC

Actually, Mariah maintained her popularity in the States until 2001, because Butterfly and Rainbow were both very popular and successful albums. They both did over 10 million worldwide, and they both had two #1 singles. But I think I was wrong, Mariah isn't the biggest-selling female artist in the States. She surpassed Madonna with TEOM in 2005, but she is still slightly behind Barbara Streisand. Maybe she can take her over with E=MC2!
