ikr? Higher is one of her best song so far. Such a pity they didn't include it on the album. Overall UNCONTROLLED is a really good and solid pop album. Way better than P<F imo. But it's not one of her best neither. They screwed up singles with engrish and alternate versions of them. Totally unnecessary, maybe not Break It which is kinda catchy although I prefer the original one. Don't know about native english speakers, but it's kinda hard for me to get what she's singing. But at least, she tried something different and I'm happy with this even if she should have experimented more with new tracks like for Dr. imo.

Okay hear's my two cents on Uncontrolled.
After one of two days listening to the album, my overall feeling about this album is kinda "I don't hate it but I don't love it." Unlike P<F, which gave me a nice surprise in the musical direction that Namie was heading towards at that time, this album is totally a stand-still rather than a progress. But in the context of 20-year anniversary, I can see why she does it. I think I am the only one troubled by the fact that her music is too western now, but not in the least irritated at her Engrish songs. I guess she wants to do English songs for her fans overseas as she is celebrating the 20th year in her career and she wants overseas fans who don't speak Japanese can sing along with her. Good move! But the sound and the songs in general are way too universal. It's a good thing she keeps evolving herself and not staying in one place, but somehow I still prefer her Play era music. All in all, the album is okay, there seems to be a good balance between songs, but a lack of a new ballad makes it seem a little imbalanced. And is it me or her voice seems to be strained, especially in Let's go? Overal rating: 3/5 Song rating (out of 5): In the spotlight (4): Good song, catchy tune but it sounds like a recycled J.Lo song. Naked (2): never like this song. Go round (5): always my favourite. And I'm surprised that I love the English version more (at least her pron is not too bad and I can sing along). SSWD (3): same feeling when I heard the single version. Hot Girls (4): Good song, the closest to her Play era songs but nothing special. Break it (1): Gosh, the remix is terrible. GMSB (3): Same feeling as the single version. LS (2.5): Okay ballad Let's go (3): Nice song, good tune and I actually like the PV. Yeah Oh (3): Great song but I can't rate it higher because of the silly lyrics (WTF is that "one thing"?) Fight together (4): Always a fan of this song. Only You (2): Totally pointless from the song to the PV. Tempest (3): Okay ballad. Never really like it. |

Actually I feel pretty much the same. Way too Western and unoriginal on this album. As for the English songs; I don't mind it all in any of the new ones, but making already amazing songs into English (GR & YO) just made them worse.

Okay, listened to the album today. Been a longgggg time fan of Namie (maybe 11 years), though the last several years I've only listened to her when her albums come out. So it was interesting to listen to an album where I haven't heard all the singles that were previously released.
So... my thoughts are, that the album is OK. I don't hate it, I don't love it. From her new era (STYLE onwards), I still love Queen of Hip Pop the best, and then Past < Future right behind it. I find Uncontrolled a little bland and forgettable to be honest. It's just simply an OK album... and I'm a bit disappointed. |
