it's... easier to have a first album? What? It's not easy to be successful from your debut album. Success is almost always gradual. And I'm just speaking form experience. I had no clue that someone called Taylor Swift existed till the Kanye thing. Like literally, me and NO ONE I know knew that she existed. Plus considering Taylor can't hit a note if her life depended on it. Did you watch her perform last night? She couldn't hit a single note.

Well...at least she got two awards. I know deep down in my heart that she is 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000x better than Swift. I was pretty mad last night, but I got over it.

Um, does anyone have the picture of GaGa wearing that green outfit while she was waiting for the Album of the year grammy?

It is a pity Taylor broke her Grammy though, they'll most likely replace it.

For those of you who arent in America that keep asking yourself who Taylor Swift is, she is a country singer who has recently broken into the pop scene. If you want to listen to some of her hits, you can try Fearless, every single on the album has gone wild in Canada. Not only that, a few of the songs that aren't singles even make Otto the billboard top 10. Maybe the last performance wasn't the best but at the same time all artists have a couple of those. Like even ayu and gaga. I don't want this all to seem like a defensive argument, but like... Swift worked very hard and she deserved it.

She writes songs that are more relatable for teens and so her audience is much more outspoken. This is not to diminish GaGa's hard work, but Taylor writes about like high school love...while GaGa writes about like... sex endeavours. A lot of you think that Taylor is a country name, but a lot of her music is now very pop. And not only is Taylor good with he music but she is also good in dealing with the paparazzi.

I think that GaGa deserved the awards that she won..like she won one for Poker Face and one for The Fame, and considering how long she has been in the business that is great. Taylor Swift had a big country scene a couple years back and it only helped her success at the award show. Not only did she consecutively release great hits just like GaGa, but she has a much wider audience as well. (her much more mainstream talent, as well as drawing in country and pop music fans).

If you dont live in North America I dont blame you...but I mean like... she got the award dont put her down for it. Like she is a big name here and she didnt get it for no reason at all.

Agreed, Taylor is a talented girl (compared to most of her generation) and even though young and mostly unknown outside the US, she deserve her awards as much as Lady Gaga does... So its unfair to bash an artist just because your favourite one didn't do as well as her

^eh we're not bashing her because she won, we're bashing her because she won and she's not as talented as other people there.

You know, one of my friends showed me the quote on their wiki page, "I think the Grammys are nothing more than some gigantic promotional machine for the music industry. They cater to a low intellect and they feed the masses. They don't honor the arts or the artist for what he created. It's the music business celebrating itself. That's basically what it's all about."

I can appreciate the grammys for showing, I guess what mainstream music in America looks like, and honoring it, but that's not going to stop me from saying what I'm gonna say about the other people there, when we're discussing it in a thread.

In my opinion, Taylor Swift cannot sing, which she proved when she was on stage, and she is no where near as innovative as some other people there. But, she is hugely successful, and I guess this is her time to be honored for being successful.

I think people just wish the Grammys were more about the actual music. But I don't really know if they've ever been that way, and looking at their track record...it's very meh to me.

As for Gaga, she proves her musical talent every time she composes a song and sings on stage. It's more than enough for me to know that she is an actual musician who had an amazing reputation in the industry before she even debuted, and will continue to have an amazing reputation whether she continues to produce solo work, or work for other people.

And you dont consider a young girl obviously having her dream a talent? She worked just as hard up a corporate ladder as GaGa did. Although some of you say that Taylor is a "country hick", she has actually worked hard in using both the country and pop style, so its not like shes only doing this one thing that she is really good at, shes spreading and doing as much as she can.

Not to mention, some of you claim to have not even heard of her, yet bash her singing talent... which just goes to show that your opinion on Taylor is made with your obsession with lady Gaga. Not that there is anything wrong with that...but I just hope you guys see that its clearly not that "shes a bad singer", its that you care so much for Lady Gaga that you feel bashing Taylor will make it better for her.

Dont get me wrong, I love Lady gaga. Ive even been to the Toronto concert here in Canada and I am going again once she has all the dates set out for the new tour. But I mean, she has equal mess ups with her acapella and piano vocals... Taylor and Gaga are considerably young and so their voices are still developing. On both of their studio tracks, they sing very well..and this award honours a studio album...how fitting.

And you also bash the Grammys and only address this award. How about all the other awards that were given that night. I think many people would also side on other peoples sides against Gaga with the same argument. Change in a music style, whether good or bad, does not always correlate with the artists success. Although Gaga maybe unique in her music, determining and critiquing an album involves everything from all the music itself, the artist, her performances etc. If you can criticize the Grammys and then go and watch it and be let down, then you are putting yourself in the expectation to dislike.

In your last statement you say that Gaga has an amazing reputation. This is very true, her fashion and her popularity and sky-rocketting. But these arent the factors that are discriminating an "Album of the Year". It took Taylor a couple albums and maybe it will take Gaga the same. Not that I would argue that Beyonce would win, but her album also had a ton of hits. What seperates Beyonce from Lady gaga and Taylor? The fact that they ALL have #1 hits? In every opinion their albums are all the best and so either way the decision would have gotten some people mad. And so it wouldn't be to blame the Grammys but to say that the artists who won shouldn't be bashed, but should be praised as well.

I get what you mean emiko... Yet, Gaga is part of that "gigantic promotional machine" as well, and if Grammys awarded real talent, the Record, Song & Album of the Year awards should go not to Taylor, nor Beyonce or Gaga, but to opera or broadway singers, or others who can reach amazing voice notes, studied music for years, etc

And, if music alone considered, I personally believe Swift and LG are at the same level, since Gaga's music videos, lavish shows, choreographies and unique fashion should not be taken into consideration at the time of that kind of awards.

^ vocal ability <> artistic value
Most opera singers can do nothing except hitting high notes, they would never deserve an award for an album.
They only get songs and belt them out. That's it. No musical talent involved.

I don't want to start an argument nor offend you... But definitely you haven't heard any opera singer aside from their opera roles. If you had, comparing them vocally to a pop singer is offensive, worse considering them inferior.

I like and respect Gaga as a singer as well, but musical value isn't built upon costumes, stage props, heavy use of synthesizers and dancing. She's an outstanding singer, enough for the dance-pop genre, but no Pavarotti or Streisand

To say they dont have any talent is to avoid the deep truth. What is musical talent for a "Song of the Year"? Opera Singers can hit every note in the book and they can do a performance in their genre. You wouldnt expect them to bust a move, because thats not what their style is about. They do what they do, and they are amazing at it.

By saying they have no talent, you go on to offend every Opera singer by saying that they have no good at doing what they do. Their work conveys equal amounts of emotion and is often accompanied with grand orchestras.

What is your criteria for "Album of the Year"? You claim that artistic value is one...but what is that? Opera singers do what they do. They might not be as popular for Teens or mainstream listening adults...but what does that mean for talent? They might not have #1 hits and dance music videos but that is not what the winner must have.

I can't find your argument. I only said that vocal ability has NOTHING to do with the artistic value of the music. Show me an opera singer with great lyrics and innovative and diverse songs that does more than just sing over it(lets say writes at least 20% of his/her work)

The main job of opera singers is being a vocalist and they do great in that role, but the vocals have nothing to do with the art created.
Artist <> vocalist.
An artist can be a vocalist and the other way round, but most simply aren't.

Opera singers have a vocal and performing talent, not a musical talent. A musical talent lies in the creation of music, vocal talent in singing.
For an "album of the year award" or "song of the year award" the vocals don't matter, because it's about the piece that is the song, not about the performance of it.

@Ayumi27: musical value isn't only built on voice either.

And since when is using synthesizers something negative in music?

I don't think she's a singer on the level of a professional vocalist, but she does have good vocals, when she's not all distorting them.

Gaga is more than just her costumes, stage props, and dancing...and honestly, I'm kind of offended that people think that way about her.

Shows what they know.

@pop: honestly, I have been waiting for Swift to show me that she can sing for a very long time. After all the lives I have seen, I remain unconvinced. I guess it's nice she can (sometimes) sing her own songs, but I definitely wouldn't listen to her sing outside of a studio track.

And my statement about Gaga having an amazing reputation "in the industry" stems from her being a composer and writer...other people might want her to win best album of the year because of her popularity, but meh. I'm personally just happy that such a talented person has managed to break into the mainstream industry. There are not many people like Gaga around at all.

She's sort of like Hikki in Japan.

But like I mentioned, it seems the Grammys is more to celebrate the successes of artists, not their musical ability. That's fine. But I think some people might have a problem with it, since it's supposed to be an awards show for music or something, and thats why they complain.

I consider Gaga much more like Perfume. Hikki had a very different style too, and she started off as a great musician but Hikki had parents who also did well in the industry. (Thus her fame, admittingly little or not, was still affected)

Personally, I think that Gaga is an icon in many aspects. And that the Fame was a great album, but Taylor could be considered in the same light. Taylor had a great album and she is equally a great icon.

You also say how Gaga also writes and composes her songs, so they are especially unique. This is true, but also for Taylor. For reference, both of heir nominated albums are mostly written by themselves. Gagas lyrics etc may appeal more to you, but that does not mean the Taylors are garbage or not worth being mentioned what so ever.

Agreed with pop909, specially that the fact Gaga is a songwriter and composer doesn't directly make her better than Swift... And at the end of the day, its all a matter of personal musical taste.

About artistry, opera singers and all of that, I still believe the same and prefer not to turn this thread into a pointless non-Gaga related discussion.

^The reference to Hikki was from the fact that hikki writes all her own songs and is successful...Gaga's parents were also involved in the industry, or so I believe. I'm not sure, but I remember thinking that she grew up with music.

Personally, I really don't care about Gaga's iconic status. It makes me happy for her, but I really only care about the music that she is actually creating as an artist and the idea that it's innovative.

So that's just where I'm coming from...other people probably feel differently...but uh, I have to go now, so...can't really say anymore.

Im glad that you like Lady Gaga just like everyone else in this thread. Im just trying to say that I dont think its right to bash Taylor just in light for Lady Gaga. Just because she won doesnt mean that she didnt deserve it.

This is just a suggestion, but I think you should try award shows that are made on a smaller scale. Usually these shows appeal more to innovation through indie music and foreign artists. Your impression of gaga makes me feel as if you like her for just the change, and if it interests you, that is what you should watch instead of the Grammys.

Although the Grammys are hitting a mainstream vote, that is undeniable, they still have awards that honour changing talents in the field. But an award show of that scale has to award all type of artists and so it becomes more "general" and less "specific" on each category.
