Listened repeatedly to it this night while staying at my parent's.
It's a solid album.
Very cohesive body of work, but also quite repetetive and with some standard songs.
E.g. Womxnly and KARMA are really similar and don't change the pace much within their course, although nice songs. And the ballads Romance and Vulnerability are nothing new. Shadow Self is the better one.
I really like Ugly Beauty now.
My top 3 are Necessary Evil, Lady in Red and Life Sucks!

The PV is awesome!

MV is really great, it's dealing with past issues:

• In the trial court, the picture shown caused a bit of a "roar" online this year, netizens said that Jolin lost her muscles on her tummy and became fat ;
• In the asylum, Jolin said once that her pursuit for perfection and criticism made her crazy ;
• Old Jolin vs overweight Jolin, she used to have issues about her weight ;
• Jolin cook vs Jolin customer: still about food issues obviously, she was obsessed with losing weight (I think she went as low as 38 kg several years ago).
• and so on.

It's about how she used to be so hard on herself before, but now she has made peace with herself.

I'm really loving this album and the direction she went in with some of the songs. Necessary Evil is amazing, kind of haunting and gritty. I like Womxnly, but I wish she'd put that in the later half of the album since it doesn't really follow the tone of the beginning (musically I mean, since lyrics might idk). I'd have preferred Ugly Beauty, which is so catchy btw, as the second song. KARMA is a bit too similar to Womxnly for me, though again I like it, but it just doesn't stand out as much with the surrounding songs. Lady in Red and Sweet Guilty Pleasure are both A+ tracks in my book.

The structure of this album reminds me a bit of MUSE where the ballads and midtempos were in the later half. I don't mind that and I'm a sucker for ballads, so I love Romance, Vulnerability, and Shadow Self a lot. Though the first two are a bit similar and I had a hard time telling them apart on my first listen, they became more distinct with subsequent listens (I got slight Slave Ship vibes at a few points of Romance, but I could be imagining the similarity). Shadow Self is my favorite from the three and really feels like the counterpart to Necessary Evil.

Hubby is a fun track and the chorus of Life Sucks is really catchy, again I would've grouped them with Womxnly and KARMA, but it's not a huge deal. I wouldn't have minded more 'experimental' tracks instead of the usual, but I also love the usual, so either way I'm happy lol Overall I really love this album and it doesn't disappoint after her recent ones. I can't wait to read all the lyrics translations.

This was a long post, but I have to say the music video is great as well! It was so well done and looked amazing, and I liked how she included all the references to her career and criticisms. I'm really hoping she has a PV for most of the songs, but we'll see.

if u read the following, there are actually more past references in her Ugly Beauty mv. eg:
- the seafood restaurant name is from her birth name + original name (蔡宜凌+蔡依翎=宜翎).
- she wear similar costume that her dancers wear in past mv.
- the Butterfly era freak show poster is the one that ppl said she "copied" ayu cover.

My first listen of the album - my favorites are Karma, Sweet Guilty Pleasure, and Life Sucks.

Yeah, it is a cohesive album and I'll have to listen a few more times through. It has a sound to it that reflects the current music trends, but not in a way that is annoying which I've been finding a lot lately.

The beat to Ugly Beauty is growing on me! I enjoyed the MV!
