Very interesting thread..I'll check the artists you mentioned, guys. Too bad that this thread isn't updated anymore.
I must say that I don't really like music from my country. Don't get me wrong,I grew with plenty of pop acts (solo and bands) such as Andra (pop, dance, ballad...great voice, great personality but her music is such a let down most of the times), Andreea Banica (mostly electropop, dance, house..commercial music), Delia (the same genres as the other two...not a big fan but lately she has been releasing some really good songs..she's starting to experiment with her music), Elena Gheorghe etc....And you probably heard of INNA and Alexandra Stan. INNA is ok,not really my type of music but she's having huge succes in Europe and not only..I heard that she concerted even in Japan.
These are mostly mainstream artists, as I don't really follow romanian music very much.

Here is Delia's newest single - Doar Pentru Tine (translated Only For You)
The pv is really artistic, I love it

Elena Gheorghe - Pana Dimineata (translated as 'Till Morning...reminds me of highschool period )
Very catchy poppy song:

Ask your friend why 21k people gave her a like on the video and why all most of the comments are positive ones. Oh and ask why she broke the record of the most viewed brazilian music video in 24h. ^^ He may be one of those hispsters kid that denies funk as part of brazilian culture. When Beyoncé came to Brazil she danced to funk on her stage, the crowd went crazy. A lot of people DO LOVE funk style but the social elite try to deny it, they're kind of ashamed of how this music style originated from the rio favelas have gained international status as part of brazilian culture.

We have plenty of talented artists here in Brunei, some of them (well, most of them) are solos; here's one of them ; Fakhrul Razi. He went to Hollywood to attend this year competition, and won some gold medal for his achievement. He released some singles and got a bunch of airplay.

Because of the music industry in my country is not as awesome as other country, our artists didn't get a chance to perform live/concert. they only attend some small venue and weddings.

here's the link of his songs;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7AlQMFzo-w

and here's the link where he's featuring with a US band;

I don't usually listen to italian music, but here's two songs I liked this year.
I like the lyrics in particular. These two singers are quite famous in Italy, btw. XD

Plus two timeless classics:

I love this one. the title translated is "the emotion has no voice"

Brazil is a country strongly affected by classism, and it goes all the all on all the cultural production having a "high-class" and a "low-class" take to it, even pop music. Valesca is among the lowest class artists we have around here, to the point of not having a label or anything.

She IS loved, but being someone who represents a class of people overseen as savages, criminals and worthless (yeap, this sucks), her influence is limited to funk carioca lovers and the LGBT comunity. I love her, and love this song... But I was expecting more from the video. The video was paid by herself and her manager btw, and her first on a 10+ years career.

We are going through an interesting moment on our pop music, as it is getting really varied lately because of the influence of regional sounds.

Those are some songs (and artists) from the last few years that I either love or respect (or both):

Luan Santana
genre: sertanejo universitário (country pop)
I'm not really a fan of his sound, mostly because I'm not from his target demography, but he is probably our most consistent hit-maker since Ivete Sangalo took over the 00's, and the boy knows how to put out a performance. I expect him to be around for some time.

Anitta
genre: funk-pop
She had the biggest hit from 2013, what is both good (she became top-tier overnight) and bad (it's hard to replicate a hit so big), her next release will determine if she will be around or not. I like her, she is ambitious and puts lots of effort into her work (her singing improved on a impressive pace this year, take notes Katy Perry).

Gaby Amarantos
genre: Technobrega (a mix of old ballads, caribean sounds and eletronic)
I expected her to get bigger, but she seens confortable being a mid-sized star. Some consider her to be our answer to Beyoncé (mostly because she started getting attention when she did a version of Single Ladies), others, to Gaga (because of her strage outfits, but this is part of our musical tradition on some genres). She rocks anyway.

Sandy
genre: indie-pop
From the late 90s to the mid 00s Japan had Ayu, USA had Britney, Korea had BoA, France had Lorie and Brazil had Sandy (paired with her brother), our own princess of pop. She and her brother are no long working together, and even if they don't sell the same anymore, they will never lose their top-tier recognization (really, people are so obsessed with her very private personal life that any little mention of it make the news, an interviewer implyed once she was into anal sex and it turned out being a major topic of discussion for months).

Thiaguinho
genre: Pagode (samba-pop)
We didn't have a pagode superstar for a while, and Thiaguinho slowly built a fanbase fronting a pagode band for years... Now he is a solo artist mixing some interesting influences on the genre sound. I'm not into his music (not for my taste, but he is pretty good on what he does), but he also can put out a show like few on the industry.

And just because I'm really biased, more of our reigning queen of pop, this time performing a remixed medley of her boys & girls and evolution at the Madison Square Garden:

Music in my country sucks, 99.99% of the industry is boob-driven i'm not even speaking about male artists, but... there's this 00.01 % left that i could listen if it was on a different genre:

Jurga Seduikyte
"5th Season"

Jurga Seduikyte
"Nebijok" ("Don't be afraid"

lyrics
Spoiler:
Barefeet again
On a carpet of grass
Or maybe sliding down the dune to the sea.
With the storm, the wind made peace
The warmth is slowly being born.
It doesn't matter that it's still freezing at night
The icy land is beautiful to you.
With dawn, birds wake up, we fall asleep.

CHORUS
Me and you, we have courage at night
To listen into the speaking of darkness.
To climb the roofs and look down.
What's dear, not to be afraid to embrace.

In the day, lots of long weeks untill the Sun goes to asleep.
I'm comming running to you,
There's no more delusion in a dream.
Longing Moons in the eyes
From what the water is in flames.
Maybe it's good,
That we hadn't met yet.

This dude.... he's an awesome songwriter but his vocals...if you can call it vocals at all...
Andrius Mamontovas
"Geltona, zalia, raudona"

quick lyrics translation
Spoiler:

Those, looking at the sky
Everlasting depths of night
Searching for a sign
Longing for you

Chorus:
We - the children of yours.
Scorched fields.
You - our water and bread.
Yellow, green, red. (note: these are the colors of a national flag)

Missguided people
In their city of granges.
Waiting for mercy
They're facing you.

Chorus.....

Those - looking at the sky
Throught the windows of foreign home.
A baby in one's arms
Silently praying for you.

Chorus....
(note: i asume the song is about those who left the country because they cannot simply afford to survive here and goes abroad to earn money and surelly misses home like everyone else and would rather be here than somewhere else.)

I've had chance to see a musical where the soundrack was done by him, it was enormously good, that i ended up asking for a CD record of the whole thing since we were working on the costumes. But i didn't get it =/. here's one of the tracks:

and an ending piece:

lyrics
Spoiler:
Today rye started blooming again
There, where fields were burning yesterday
Ashes turned into land
Everything returned back to her.

To the heavens go a squad of thieves
Tomorrow, already, they will be back here.
Day dawns again and again
And night claims it again.

Hawks will turn into lambs once more.
Will go down to soar high.
And if the river dries down during drought
It will be woken up by rain over again.

This game - wings of a mill
Millstones, roads of birds.
The end will get the begining once again (literally it translates like "The end is awaited by begining" but it's basicly saying that the end will start again hence having a begining, basicly the beggining of the end lol)
Spoilts in the wheel of a carriage.

Everything that ends, returns to the beggining.
Everything that happened will repeat itself.

leoberlin : the song is really nice, has a summerish feel (the cover is really beautiful).. reminds me of erreway...when I was little I was a big erreway fan...it was in the period when one of our tv channels broadcasted their tv series.

I know that most people know a lot of English music anyway but here's some of my personal favourites that don't get a huge amount of international exposure.

The Farmer's Daughter - Babyshambles
Babyshambles are the sort of band that sounds like they're falling apart during the verses and tighten up amazingly at the chorus. Their latest album "Sequel to the Prequel" is brilliant.

Levi Stubbs' Tears - Billy Bragg
Billy Bragg is, I like to think, a national treasure. Most of his songs are politically inspired love songs. Think Woody Guthrie with an electric guitar. What I like the most about Billy Bragg is how "English" he is.

Wildest Moments - Jessie Ware
A pretty new artist, I couldn't turn off her début album.

The It-Switch - Johnny Marr
Probably best known as "the guitarist from the Smiths" he launched his solo career around 25 years after the band split up with some corking tunes. I saw him live last year a couple of times and despite the lyrics not being great the music is all that's required, really.

Timeless Melody - La's
They only released one album and what an album it was.

Bad Girls - M.I.A.
I know she's Sri Lankan, but she's lived in England so much and she's a British national, so.

Robin Hood - Ocean Colour Scene
An absolutely underrated band and this lovely song was a b-side!

That should be enough... eh.
