It would be on Ayu's koseki (family registration chart) as far as I can believe, anyway. Japan is pretty on top of that stuff. Of course divorces and all that can make...for interesting trip ups, but unless her mother remarried it wouldn't be changed I believe.

in my opinion Mariko changed the surname into her maiden's in the end...i've the feeling she wanted to break with the past and keep apart ayu from the man who left them...
So i would have done if i was a mother, but obviously it's just my opinion
