i agree.

forgiveness wasn't as successful as they had expected . so they immediately made no way to say ... the only thing i don't understand is why & didn't have good sales ..

700,000 is Big wall@for all artists in Japan.
The song exceeding 700,00 has big reason to sell well.

I suprise at how ayumi sells well in Japan.

Well, Ayumi's popularity is certainly decreasing. I really appreciate for all the new things she has done but I really think that she has to slow down. I mean, it's some kind of policy that Ayu releases a album, remix albums and singles every single year. I think she was preoccupied with hosting Ayu Ready? as well as RAINBOW HOUSE that she does not have time to concentrate on her music and styling a new image.

I hope that she will be able to manage well between Ayu Ready? and her music. I think she had to rush those albums and the singles out as the year is coming to an end.

Perhaps for next year, she might decide to have a break between her singles like for 1 or 2 months? In this way, I'm sure the excitement would be up.

Her image is always changing, it's really great we get new things, but I think that Ayumi should take it slowly. Or maybe it's Avex again manipulating the things. *evil Avex* haha

In my opinion, the thing is, even though Ayu's popularity's dropping there's really no one to take her place...this was different for Namie a few years back because Ayu (and later Hikki maybe?) was right there to take her place as the reigning artist. So I guess unless Hikki makes a comeback or some new super talent comes along there's really no one to fill Ayu's spot, meaning she's still gonna stay on top!!

And I think you guys shouldn't worry bout the sales much...I mean, I would only get worried if Ayu's singles didn't reach no.1 or something, but since all of them did then that proves she's still quite popular. We may be used to hear Ayu getting no.1s but it's not that easy for other artists... So yeh, no need to worry for now.~

Thumbs up

Yes,Japan is in a depression state now.
So a newcomer artist cannot be advertized on a large scale.
It is one reason.

I think Ayu resembles morning musume rather than utada, nakashima and namie in a certain meaning.
Ayu completely differs from namie in the reason for becoming popularity.
namie is cool.ayu is emotional.
Ayu and momusu performed much concert.
Fan of Ayu and Momusu overcome happiness and distress.

Recently Momusu athletic meet was carried out in Tokyo Dome.
Tokyo Dome hold 55,000.
Tokyo Dome almost became no vacancy on that day.
But their single cannot sell no less than 100,000 copys.

The most important thing is making good music.

I think ayu should slow down the pace... since she's become Queen of J-pop for a few years, ppl have great expectations to her releases... but the stuff came out in a rush and the quality is pretty controversial: Some really love it, but others hate it. It's because we can't guarantee all the ppl who were impressed by ayu's songs several years ago still love her in 2003.
Actually, Hikki is a good example for ayu. She only released a single 'COLORS' this year, and sold pretty well (nearly 900k). It's because she does not overexpose in the media; unfortunately, ayu does. Maybe avex and ayu think more appearances will keep up the popularity. NO!! It will only make more and more ppl feel tired of ayu, saying 'OMG! Ayu again... singing her typical ballad again." and such...

Well, ayu did it... coz '&' was out after a 10 month hiatus since 'Voyage' (if 'RAINBOW' is treated as a 'single', it's only 4 months...)And it sold well... 610,000 is not bad... without those limited versions like 'H'. Guys, don't expect ayu to have same sales like SMAP and Hikki. I think we believe ayu always makes good music no matter what happens to her.

Well...its not as bad, and I think releasing only 1 or 2 singles a year isn't going to exactly help...on average her sales is still topping the other artists, BoA, ELT, DAI etc pretty much releases singles at a similar rate (well, just like 1 or 2 less per year) yet their sales are much lower~

there are exceptions but alot of people's sales are dropping, by looking at Rainbow, even her album sales has dropped...

and uggh...please don't compare Ayu to MoMusu x_X" But I just don't think slowing down the pace would help all that much...

but like what was said...there's no one to take her place at the moment and it won' t be an existing artist like BoA, Mika or Ayaya, it'd be someone out of the blue.

her album rainbow was release 2002- does sales are for this year haft million is pretty good... if you count all her rainbow album sales i think makes 2million... wat more you want.... rainbow cant be first place this year cause it was release 2002

but haft million this year is pretty good

as for the singles you cant expect ayu always to sell million with each single--after she takes out new one each 2-3months.. people arent rich

No, there is a singer waiting to take advantage of Ayu's probable absence next year, Aya Matsuura. She's only been out for a short while (I think this is the first year of her career, correct me if I am wrong) and like whay happened to Ayumi, she probably won't reach real popularity till her second year. Remember, back in her 'Poker Face' days, Ayu was seen as a second-rate J-pop singer, and the Japanese fans just saw a 'stupid' pop idol wannabe ready to steal the crown from the then beloved Namie Amuro, who at that time was on maternity absence. The fact that she constantly referred to herself in the third-person, infuriated J-Pop fans also. Nowadays, Aya's attempts to overdue the cuteness are seen in that same light, although may soon turn to her advantage, like Ayumi's 'third-person' did eventually. I'm a fan of both Ayumi and Aya, but I'm at odds about this possible predicament. Let fate run it's course and we'll see what happens.

oh god, I don't need Aya Matsuura to overtake Ayu. She seems very processed.

That's how people felt when Ayumi first entered the pop scene. Namie Amuro was a pop idol with rythm (and tattoos ) and people felt that Ayumi was just too manufactured with just a Barbie-doll image going for her. Once they heard the deep, meaningful lyrics to her songs, their perspective changed drastically (when she began to change her image also). I believe that Aya has some attributes that the public will soon notice.

Yup! We still do. Tho the loss in cd sales was evident since the release of Daybreak/Free&Easy. Even though H sold over 1 million, I remember them not selling so good.

I don't think Aya Matsuura will be the one to overtake Ayu anytime soon. It's just when I think "Aya Matsuura" I don't think "Upcoming Idol". Nakashima Mika seems very popular these days.

When I think of Matsuura Aya, I think "buriko." 100%. I don't think talent or anything. Besides, most of the HELLO project group isn't taken very seriously, I shouldn't think. Nakashima Mika might be able to rival ayu, but I couldn't see anyone else doing it. I would vote for A-rina (Aiuchi Rina) before Nakashima or Ayaya combined. ~_~

ayumin had a point: ayu's not a "cool" person (cool as a cucumber, that is) she's very emotional. It is a very different kind of fame than Amuro or Utada, who are mature, withdrawn, etc. etc. ayu is about honesty.

Hmmm... that's sad

I do agree that ayu releases to many singles, but personally I really refer buying singles than the albums ^^ why? I don't have a clue!
