Because of her cover on A Ballads? that's her past self forgiving her present self. Ayu is not a gay icon. I guess some people who like ayu are gay but I guess that's just as much as other artist. Fans are people. And people can be of every sexuality. So......

I don't know why Ayu (or anyone else) can be considered a "gay icon". That'd be like saying Gackt is a gay icon as well, and that's not really true. I'm sure there's many guys out there who like him, but it doesn't mean they're gay. A few people you may know doesn't constitute a majority.

No. When they say Madonna I can agree in a way (I'm a fan of her, but I'm not gay) because she did lots of things involving gay culture. And what about Ayumi? Nothing. (At least I don't think so. A Ballads cover had nothing to do with gay culture o_O if people are thinking about that)

I am homosexual, but i do not believe that Ayu is a part of gay culture.... ;| that's a rather strange statement. but, i do know many other homosexual (men) who enjoy Ayu a lot... but that doesn't mean that all men who like Ayu are homosexual. it just depends on what you like! i'm not into gay culture at all ( let me be!), so i may be off on this. whatever, it's just my opinion =).

well. ayu did include drag queens in the "real me" pv. ^.^ but that was more of a statement of "what exactly is a woman?" and kind of trying to break female stereotypes.
I happen to be gay, and love ayu, but I don't consider her a gay icon.
there are artists who I consider gay icons, and are considered so by the general public:
Madonna
Cher
Elton John
Tori Amos
Sarah McLachlan
The Indigo Girls
Jewel
Rufus Wainwright
and many others.
but of course, anyone can like any of these artists. but it is a known fact that all of them have a huge gay fanbase, and for some of them, the majority of their fanbase is probably gay.
but of course I agree with all of you who say stereotypes and generalizations are bad; however, I don't believe the intention of this thread was to generalize or sterotype anyone. I believe it was more out of curiosity of whether ayu's gay fanbase is large enough to call her a "gay icon." maybe it just could've been worded better? ^.^'
but i'm really happy to see so many of you are open-minded and not resorting to any kind of name-calling or anger. that's really refreshing. lol anyway.
so there you have it. my final answer.

LOL!
So not true!
I live in Brazil, and I know like.... 3 ayu fans (men) and not even one is gay! I am not gay! Many people here are not gay! Of course some fans of her happen to be gay, but that doesnt mean she is a gay icon! Saying that is just wrong!

-yep exactly... althoughthey do were men dressed with bras.... did anyone see the making of Real me?? you should!

-and it was me who started the other thread! before..... and it got locked!
ppl don't like to see ayu as an gay icon.

I just think that she's like madonna... and madonna has very big fan base of gay ppl ayu should too... not beacuase she's whos she is.. but beacuase she's pop and there are somethings she has done that resemble gay symbols.. like Aballads pictures... The cover of seasons.. with a t'shirt with a G and a rainbow... and the album rainbow and the pv of real me.... stuff like that.

they may not be intended that way.. it depends on the person... ppl ddind't buy the album rainbow becasue it was gay... maybe. you like rainbows and you bought it, maybe you are gay and its something you like, maybe you like the colors.... it depends on the person like i said.

It's sort of funny how so many people are getting defensive about this. ^_^

I think Ayumi's music is pretty much universal in the fact that anyone could (and many do) enjoy it. And, not to sound cliché, but it's not limited to race, age, sex, nationality, anything. Good music is GOOD MUSIC, regardless of the circumstances. =)

aack! lol I SWEAR, I really did think they (the two main dancers) were drag queens. oops. lol the one with the longer hair just really has a more masculine body. the way she moves, it just made me think of a man. I feel bad now.
^.^'
but damnit, it made so much more sense to me when they were drag queens! that totally messes up my whole theory on the meaning of the pv.
*sigh*
ah well.

i don't see how she is a gay icon.... i don't have any probelm with gay people(they are the coolest people around) but still.... saying a statement like that is kinda i dunno weord... come to think of it i never consider any artist a gay icon....becuase they aren't making music exclusively for gay people... and i don't see any of them proclaiming themselves as gay icons...so yeah....

Personally I really think she is in a lot of ways, but I could go either way saying she is or she isn't. However being gay and a fan of hers, I see threads and topics about her all over the place when I'm on chat sites or just plain talking to guys and it's crazily suprising at times. She has a huge gay fanbase. She can still be an icon to anyone else, not just specifically gay people so yeah I guess I think she is.

Well I'd imagine not, but that doesn't mean she still can't be a gay icon.

Not a gay icon but can be very attractive toward gays XD Well, ayu has her charm. It doesn't matter how the fan is like to support and love her. I'm quite sure Ayu will not mind either

I'm just glad to know more ppl who adores and supports Ayu
