Mika's sales aren't that bad you know:

I guess this was based on who was all over Japan this year, how song was played on the radio alot, Video is heavy rotation or whatever. This is my only guess is what people voted on.

i think this list is the list where they survey the 3,000,000. its not only based on sales but also lifestyle, influence over japanese ppl etc. the article for koda kumi winning this was already posted here.

See Music sold really badly compared to her previous full album. Same goes to her singles. The sales are mediocre and suddenly she gets a those explosive sales with NANA. Plus if it is based on sales I think Ayu should have been at #4? I donno but for me it sounds weird.

^ ひとり sold low because it was a re-cut single..but yeah, her single sales have never been that great. MUSIC was quite a bit lower than LOVE as well, which was a pity because imho, MUSIC is a masterpiece.
sad to see NONE of the Hitomi's on the list..they all released great quality stuff this year.

B'z did release an original album this year. It sold a little over 500,000 (I don't think as much as previous albums), but I still believe it's one of the best selling albums of the year. It's a great album, IMO. They deserve higher.

yeah but none of her singles usually sell so well.. yeah. It's odd how it suddenly sold so well. Obviously NANA was a major factor for those huge sales.

I'm surprised to not see Ayu up, but I can at least be grateful that she's on there.
I think Kumi should definitely be high up on the list, but I'm not sure about #1. And it's really sad not to see hitomi on there...and surprising not to see Hikki! This whole list is just a bundle of surprises.

but congrats everybody...at least ayu still there hope ayu can repair her position in the next year... i really hope ayu release her best album next year and another album...and a single for sure

I'm not surprised to not see Hikki on the list...her singles have sold absolutely zilch lately and therefore, she doesn't have quite the influence on the japanese public she used to. even though sale numbers don't play a part in the voting process they do indirectly because if the singles and albums don't sell then that's less publicity for the artist and therefore, they wouldn't get as many votes.
