She should stop with the classy crap, I think it is certainly contributing to her lack of sales. I wish she would go back to the good old day when she would where those cool clothes that would be instantly copied by teenage girls all over Japan. You know, the type of clothing that young people actually like and can relate with.

i would venture to guess as seen here some people like the mature ayu and some like the old funky ayu, problem is she can't satisfy both, and since she's been out there so long i don't think there are as many people who want to jump onto the ayu bandwagon as fast as some people are bailing off, that's where we see the sales dropping. There is no single ayu style that will make everyone happy, sadly.

Why is it so much about what she wears?

Hello! ayu is almost 30... you know and like she's a woman and stuff and like she's not a cutie, teeny girl anymore

Ugh, why would that affect sales? Its like people need to understand that ayu's sales are low for these reasons:

- people are not into her as much
- teen girls are into teen idols, not old grandmas like ayu
- they just don't care to buy the album
- the music industry is different now
- people aren't buying CDs as much as they use to

um yeah

Teen girls are still into Ayu as she is still a teen idol, just like

Namie -29
Kylie - 38
Gwen - 37
Mariah - 36
Fergie - 30 (even though she looks 10 000 years old)

Plus much more

Teen girls really aren't that into them.

Its mostly older teens, 20 somethings and gay men.

neither do I but I remember seeing the footage of the homecoming tour on the news and I could not believe the amout of teenage girls and tweeny boppers there. Kylie even got this 8 year old girl dressed in a showgirl costume to get up on stage and sing CGYOOMH with her.

Probably be more young fans too, when she releases something again, it's been a gazillion years since her last song.

and if teenagers can worship singers that look like Fergie, it gives hope to all others, lol.

Look at her shows and whatever. I don't see A LOT of young teen girls

But anyway lets not get too far off topic, its about ayu's now and then

ayu will never be as she was. People just need to accept that.

um yeah
If Ayu's an old grandma at 28.... well, yeah. Someone at 28 isn't old or anywhere near grandma status. That's just stupid to say.

Who said that any of those singers look any better dressing cutesy or sexy? I think they look silly, personally. As would ayu if she dressed like koda & kylie do.

Cheers to ayu for growing up. Other singers her age & older need to (and not show their butts hanging out of their shorts on their cd covers like mariah did)

And no 28 isn't old but most jpop singers are 20 or younger, so compared to most teeny pop stars, ayu IS a grandma. As is Namie, but she reinvented herself so much that no one seems to notice how long they've been around (same with artists like hitomi)... ayu's change has been more gradual from pop to dance to rock and back again, so. yeah.

And the older ayu may have made more people happy, but ayu's gonna do what she wants. She's gonna do what makes AYU happy. If she wants to wear alot of dresses and not be such a trendsetter anymore, then so be it. Some people care more about the quality of the music, which has certainly changed with her style over the years. People should (though they usually don't, i know) buy ayu's albums based on the musical content, not how cute she is in the booklet. If you don't like her MUSIC now, then fine, don't buy the album, but if you do, then don't put the CD back on the shelf just because she's wearing a fancy black dress on the cover instead of a hoodie or jeans.

to answer the question about why clothes/style matters... it just does i mean there is a CD/DVD version of the album for a reason, its to sell to those people who want to see the artist. Not that i am in favor of this but its easy to just download albums and burn onto a CD and get roughly the same quality, its not nearly as easy to do the same with the DVD. As i've said many times i love the way ayu looks and i have no problems but i can see where other fans might be turned off.

haha... i think we can/should compare ayu in the past with the present ayu. cos ayu grows and matures! previously, i saw her as a cute little girl with a very mature thinking. her concert costumes made her cute occasionally. but now judging from AT 2006, i really think that ayu is a DIVA right now. she has grown up to a 28 year old women. i dont think its wise for ayu to go back to her times?

She just wanted to have a change, y'know... She just wanted to leave the whole lolita thing, but by looking at her i can say that she can still give that image... but u know if she did this all the time people would just get sick of it! But I agree with you on the sexy/expensive thing... I'm so sick of seein people doin that ol' same ****! Man! Do something new.... One of these days we'll see Ai Otsuka do that as well!! We just have to wait and see if she changes... If Ayu started mixin' yukatas well... kimonos and other japanese traditional things with modern stuff that'd be a mind blower!
But once again: It'd suck if ppl only bought her albums because of her looks!

Wow, how coincidental...I was thinking about this subject (well atleast the subject of Ayu's style) days ago; but it really hit it's peak with the new TeamAyu 257 message. I can't believe AKIRA let her walk out the house in that rediculous thing. I mean really; it's just terrible. Aside from that, I can understand complaints of so many dresses and the choice of sexy costumes.

But the bottom line is, Ayumi Hamasaki is an entertainer. She must be able to wear and look good in anything she wears while performing. Whether it be a bra-top and denim shorts or a man's dress shirt she has to look the part in order to be the part. You wouldn't expect Romeo and Juliet to dress in hiphuggers and skinnylegs so why would Ayu wear the same costume she wore in WHATEVER as in JEWEL. I don't think she intentionally wears dresses more often now...Judging from the Startin' video; but like she said in an interview last year; she likes wearing dresses now.
Then again, it does have to do with the EVOLUTION of AYUMI. She's not a little girl anymore. We can't expect her to keep running around in pigtails when she's clearly on the brink of 30 all her life. It's cute, it's sweet but she's growing up and so are we. Though she hasn't exactly found that ESSENCE of style that she had before as of now; eventually she will get it and you guys will all be like; "hell yeah; that's my ayu right there".

But yeah, I do get aggrivated by some of the things she wears...I personally think AKIRA's time is up as a costume designer for her because she's losing her touch in my opinion.

Hate or love me for this...but Ayumi has never been a really beautiful artist to me. Sure she is cute, I like her style, but for me it's always been about the music. If the mature look floats her boat, then great, whatever...as long as she keeps throwing out great tracks il be her fan for life.

p.s. im not saying that I wouldnt marry her given the chance though....

I agree with you. I think teenagers now CAN'T relate to her at all. I know I don't relate to her anymore now..compared to the past. She's too fake and dolly now.
