Interview with ''Give It To Me'' BELT Designer!



DrownedMadonna.com talked with Rico Mann, who designed the belt worn by Madonna on her ''Hard Candy'' cover.

DROWNEDMADONNA: Hi Rico, how did you get in touch with Madonna?

RICO MANN: Madonna's stylist B. made the initial contact with Ed Chuman, the director of operations for Reggie Parks Championship Belts, seeking a custom title belt for Madonna. Ed then forwarded the email to me and I made contact with B. via phone to discuss her need, timeframe, etc.. then followed up with an email outlining our process which also included images of some of our more widely known belts and the prices associated with them. We then discussed the email and several belts before B. presented the info to Madonna.

DM: Was there any belt that inspired Madonna?

RM: There was a belt in the samples that Madonna really liked and wanted her belt based on. We agreed on the price, I developed the art, Madonna signed off on it and it went into production.

DM: Can you describe the process of making the belt for Madonna?

RM: Reggie Parks and his crew created the base silver belt on black leather, which was then sent to Dave Millican for dual plating (adding 24k gold accents by hand) and for paint. It was then shipped to B. who hand delivered it to Madonna in London.

DM: Why did Madonna choose you?

RM: B. said that they had been fans of our work, considered us the best title belt makers in the world and said that when Madonna wants something she always goes with the Best. Quite a compliment from the world's largest Pop Icon!

DM: Can you give our readers some background on you?

RM: "The King of Belts" Reggie Parks developed the process used to create most major title belts in wrestling and MMA today, and has been making them for over 40 years. "The Ace of Belts" Dave Millican has been doing the same for more than 20 years and is widely considered the foremost title belt historian in the world today. Both men are widely accepted as the Best title belt makers in the world. I've been designing custom championship belts for just over 7 years and have brought a whole new artistic style to the medium. Together we are responsible for the majority of the title belts used in wrestling and mixed martial arts today including those used by the Ultimate Fighting Championships, World Extreme Cagefighting, bodogFIGHT, American Fight League, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, the National Wrestling Alliance, and New Japan Pro Wrestling among many many others. We also produced the most popular WWF title belts which were used in the 80's and early 90's.

It doesn't take anywhere close to "4 Minutes" to realize that Madonna is poised to score her first top 10 hit since 2005's "Hung Up." The launch single from upcoming "Hard Candy"—her 11th and final studio album for Warner Bros.—co-stars Justin Timberlake, with production props from Timbaland. There's an awful lot going on in the busy dance track: sing-song verses, insistent foghorns, cowbells, chants of "tick-tock" and "Madonna, Madonna," and a rap from Timbaland—but the trade-off chorus between Madge and Justin of "We've only got four minutes to save the world" is hooky enough unto itself to sell the song. "4" qualifies as an event record between superpowers who not only share equal billing, but sound gangbusters together. Expect instantaneous penetration for this spring break '08 anthem.

Official sources confirm today our previous reports about remixer Bob Sinclair who created a new dance version of 4 minutes. The following news item is just in from our friends at www.madonnaunderground.nl who got it from Warner Music NL

In 2002 Junkie XL scored a massive hit with his remix of the Elvis Presley song 'A little less conversation'. Now, 6 years later, he's been given the possibility to create the single '4 Minutes', the first single off Madonna's new album Hard Candy.

French producer Bob Sinclar also created a remix of '4 Minutes', however the remix by Junkie XL will be released sooner on April 14. According to Madonna's spokesperson, Madonna is very happy with the remix. Junkie XL said that she didn't have anything to say about it, and thought it was great. This past Thursday, March 20, the DJ was a guest in the show De Wereld Draait Door where he shows how he created the remix. In the TV studio he had a mini version built of his studio, so he could show how such a remix was created.

Hi Keith,

Madonna just released her new single "4 Minutes" featuring Justin Timberlake. Do you think American radio stations will play it along with other singles from her upcoming album "Hard Candy?" They shamelessly ignored (her last album) the great "Confessions on a Dancefloor."

This time she collaborated with Timbaland, Pharrell and of course Timberlake. Will this fact entice U.S. radio to put Madonna back onto the airwaves where she belongs?

Hi Michael,

It seems like the magic combination of Madonna, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland is already working. In "4 Minutes'" first three days of radio release, 60 monitored U.S. radio stations played it seven times or more. That includes WIHT Washington, D.C. (29 spins), KHJZ Houston, Texas (29 spins), WKXS Boston (22 spins) and WHTZ New York (19 spins).

Next week it will likely debut on the CHR/Top 40 airplay chart in our sister publication Radio & Records. It also has a chance of debuting on The Billboard Hot 100 as well.

We'll see if radio stations continue to embrace "4 Minutes" in the coming weeks. It wouldn't be unusual for stations to back off a song after an initial flurry of activity, especially if the song doesn't react well with a station's audience.

On a side note, "4 Minutes" will not only be released as a digital download in the coming weeks, but it will also be granted a physical single release in the U.S. The remixes of "4 Minutes," crafted by Tracy Young, Bob Sinclair and Junkie XL, will be released on CD Maxi, 12" vinyl and of course digitally.

Madonna's "Hard Candy" album drops April 29.

The first one sounds like a fan edit of The Beat Goes On, second was Candy Shop, third was Keep The Trance, and last was 4 Minutes.
