There are many purposes that region coding can achieve, but the primary one is price discrimination, i.e., allowing the manufacturer to demand a higher or lower price depending on what the market will allow.

Another purpose is controlling release dates. One of the traditions of movie marketing that the advent of home video threatened is the practice of releasing a movie (to theaters) later in some countries than in others. Video tapes were essentially regional anyway, since video tape formats had to match those of the encoding system used by television stations in that particular region, such as NTSC and PAL. DVDs are less restricted in this sense, and region coding allows movie studios to better control the global release dates DVDs. However, the fact that such classics as "Casablanca" are sold with region codes suggests that price discrimination plays a more important role than release dates do.
...

basically. the reason why not everyone can buy/use dvds from other countries has to do with the companies making more money.

also. not a single dvd player in my house is region choosable. i have looked up online all of the models and no code exists for any of them.

and i heard from somewhere that every utada dvd is region free except UH1 or something like that? like, there is only one dvd of hers that is region 2 only. I do know that it's from her first love/distance era. And I'd love to own some utada stuff. only thing I have is the bootleg/ebay version of uu06. which was very nice btw. XD if only she released more singles in cd/dvd.

You can try and save up and get a region free DVD player for about $60 from Amazon.com.

you live near a chinese karaoke store? XD that's cool. what place is that?

and i hear that the region free dvd players are the really cheap knock off ones that come from a company that can't afford to put region encoded restrictions on their players. so I should be on the look out for one. thank god its the cheap ones that are region free.

Uh I live near San Gabriel California and there's this asian plaza with a 99 ranch market and there's this store...yeah....well I'm sure it's not the only one. Any asian record stores should carry them and we have ALOT of asian stores here...problem is you don't know what you get. We had one that worked pretty well now...at least 2 years old. We had one that was like 3 months old and it started freezing alot.

even if you buy a region-free DVD player for $100, you'll get your money's worth out if.

Especially if you don't mind buying Hongkong / Taiwan press for Ayu (and other artist's) DVD's. On a tour DVD I think you can save about 30 / 40 dollars, just by buying overseas press instead of JP!

Just consider that when buying one.

Very nice Passion/Sanctuary compilation from different shows of the In The Flesh Tour brought to you by inu-liger of utadanet forum. Audio is from the NYC show.

Dirty Desire will be on Just Dance vol. 3

^ Holy crap.... I'm honestly not just trying to be a *****, but did she sound good in any song, during any concert? :\ Every video I've seen, it sounds like she's hardly even trying or something. I would have been sorely disappointed, had I actually spent my time and money to see her.

^I think the concert was just sooo much better because you were actually there in the room with her "in the flesh". I don't remember her sounding so bad when I went to the new york show. but just being there makes all the difference. like how so many people (from times past) have complained about how bad ayu sounds live at concerts while watching the videos (i.e. cdl 09-10), but the people that actually went to the concert thoroughly enjoyed it, mainly cause they were caught up in the excitement of actually being there.

incase anyone wants to hear, I took the bridge of the song (the backwards part) and reversed it to see how close her singing was to the real thing. I think she did a really good job except for the "so many ups and downs" part. it just sounds like "so many alghreaothaagflerahgw40t2".

I agree! Utada's lives are amazing. She may not be as flashy and have a tonne of dancers behind her but her personality and emotions really shines through her vocals. My favourite is the Utada United version of Sakura Drops, its so pretty....

I think you're just overreacting from shock XD. She doesn't sound amazing (like she did during Utada United <3) but her singing isn't very off either. Plus you have to imagine it's new territory for her, God knows how nervewrecking it might have been for her to perform in the US and the UK. I think she really didn't do that badly ˆˆ

Also, I'm kinda late to the game, but I love her hair long like this. At first, I didn't even like that she'd gotten slim, but now I see it was just the hair XD.

Personally, I couldn't hear a single off-key note in the London concert.

But that was probably just because I was standing so close I would've been able to touch her if she reached to me.
So I was in a trance.

yeah same here, if they include footage of the final London show, I'm definitely on there.

I'm guessing 2011. I just don't see anything happen this year. But I hope she proves me wrong.

no, you wouldn't have been. i'm sure live recordings don't do the performances justice because i saw her in Chicago and her vocals were absolutely FLAWLESS. everything about her vocals blew me away and honestly i think many of her live vocals sounded much better than her studio vocals.
