I'm not surprised of Namie getting more popular and Ayu selling less. Namie's music style IMO attracts more people now. As for Ayu, she has been sticking with the same music genre, except for the hardcore rock that is getting less and less popular in Japan. HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR (a rock band) aren't as popular as they were when they debuted. Right now, people seems to be a lot more into urban or mellow rock like YUI, ayaka, Kobukuro... Pop is slowing fading away.

namie is going the creative and ever changing style of music, while new comers like ayaka, YUI are going the simple yet new/refreshing style of music..

ayu is just going the same flashy, high-production, depressing lyrics, emotional songs, fancy PVs she did for years and years....

when you do something the same for too long a time, it's normal for ppl to get bored and uninterested with it, it's reality...

it doesn't matter only around 40K, not much different imo ...in a few months time both will be around the same

look at the progression of these two jpop queen:

(2000)
ayumi hamasaki Duty : 2,904,420
namie amuro break the rules : 334,520

(2003)
ayumi hamasaki Memorial address : 1,062,297
namie amuro STYLE : 221,874

(2008)
ayumi hamasaki GUILTY : 564,290
namie amuro PLAY : 526,225

the difference was used to be SO MUCH...now? it's barely.
Basically becaues ayu's getting a bit less popular after every album?

I would compare Secret sales with PLAY though, last year general sales were better than this year

i will compare their most RECENT work...

if you want i can compare namie's SWEET 19 BLUES and ayu's A song for XX but it don't make sense...why compare secret to namie's latest play?

Well, I don't necessarily agree that Namie's style is "ever-changing". For me, she's always sort of going with the same style of music. But it's always really catchy and she's really different from other urban singers.

Agree though that artist like ayaka are refreshing. I've always been a huge fan of the mellow rock genre with really instruments and all that.

It's true that Ayu likes to go with the fancy and flashy stuff. I wish she stopped doing all that though. It seems like she's more about being glamorous now. I prefer the old days when she used to just wear a shirt and jeans in a TV perf. and look damn cool.

Obviously because GUILTY was released 2 months ago. You could compare Namie's latest album sales PLAY that was released 8 months ago, to ayu's lastest album Secret that was released 7 months before PLAY (you could do it just 2 months ago).
Now that is not fair is it?

And it's obvious ayu's album sales won't go up if something special wouldn't occure.

but isn't it obvious that namie PLAY should STOP charting after 9 months of release??? But look what happened now? Do you think given 9 months after GULITY release it will still be charting at all? It's selling less then PLAY only in it 12th week!

SO it should be unfair to compare PLAY with GUILTY and not the other way round! PLAY was released so long back it should be dead and gone while GUILTY should be selling quite well since it just released 2 months back... but now the situation is opposite!

Ayu isn't a long charter no more, I wouldn't be surprised that in 9 months GUILTY would stop charting.

Because it's sold the most at the first 2 weeks (like always) and ayu didn't release any triple a-side single/album since then that will keep it charting?

Generally ayu's chart life wasn't even great on Secret and miss albums.

Hip hop is a niche genre in Japan, it's not very popular. Pop is still the dominant form of music, by far.

Ayu is getting less popular because her music is getting less mainstream and she's been pretty damn overexposed the for the last decade. People get sick of you when your face is everywhere.

But artists like Morning Musume, BoA and Ai Otsuka aren't really getting more popular though. Instead, we have artists like Namie, Koda, GReeeeN, Ken Hirai, EXILE getting more fame.

What will keep it charting depends on the singles that was released for the album and the promotion though the live concerts..

for namie, her PLAY tour did A LOT of promotion for the album...those who can't decide or dun buy PLAY, when they went to her PLAY tour 2007, they are WOW!!! and immediately go buy her album...so it still charting very well

for ayu, her concerts dun even feature much of her new album songs, only her regular old school songs, that's why it's hard to promote her new album to those who never listened/bought it yet...

Actually, Ayu's last 3 tours since MY STORY all have mostly the new album's tracks.

Well there was a tour to promote Secret, but Secret didn't chart anymore until the tour came and she sang most of the songs from that album (until that Day..., 1 LOVE, kiss o' kill, momentum, JEWEL, Secret and there were Not yet, LABYRINTH, tankist) she didn't sing Startin', BLUE BIRD, BF and Born To Be... because she already sanged them. So much for old school songs but at the end ayu sings most of the new albums songs and leave out 1 or 2 unsanged which is pretty normal.
I think that Tour though was more to promote her in ASIA. She's really successful out there it seems.

no...i dun think so

there's only like 3~4 new album tracks in the concert while all the rest are her new singles or old singles...

for PLAY TOUR, she performed ALL the songs in the album! You practically listened to the whole album when you go for the concert which is a +++ for the promotion...

The only artist that actually produces R&B listed there is Ken Hirai, and he's in a pretty big slump. The others may have some hip hop influenced tracks, but they're all famous for their ballads. Namie and Kuu's pop/kawaii singles always do better than their other tracks. While select pop artists are going downhill, that has more to do with their own failure to evolve than the slump of pop music; JE bands are still dominating the industry.

Yet the only song from Secret that were never sang live is It was
from (miss) - criminal, In The Corner
MY STORY - HOPE or PAIN, Liar

etc. She just leaves 1-2 songs out that she never perform (or will perform in the future), I think it's mainly because ayu loves to balance old and new songs and I do think it's better because it's full of fans flavors, but new songs as well to get them recognised to the fans and make them a show combined with the old songs, rather than a whole new album and just 3 old songs or something, but those are preferences and ways of an artist to do a show.
